Super-Eccentric Clinton Portis Talks Comeback, Weighs in on Obama/Biden, L.T. and Daniel Snyder

June 20, 2012 – 8:00 am by Brad Gagnon

Clinton Portis isn’t ready to say he’s retired, but he hasn’t been in the NFL since 2010 and he’s at peace with the idea that he might never get another job in this league. In the meantime, he’s spending his time at NBA playoff games, interviewing Mike Tyson on Canadian television and attending Vice-Presidential fundraisers.

Clinton Portis joined Holden Kushner and Danny Rouhier on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C. to discuss what he’s been up to in the media and political worlds, a potential comeback, LaDainian Tomlinson’s retirement and his appreciation for Daniel Snyder.

On how he’s feeling and if he plans on making a comeback:

“I feel great, man. We’ll see what happens. … Being away for so long, who knows? I think I’m cool with the idea of either — if I get another opportunity or if not — to move on in life. I already moved on in life, really, and it’s kind of like, if things happen then cool, if not, that’s cool too. I think I’m enjoying where I’m at right now.”

On attending a fundraiser for Joe Biden:

“I can’t tell you anything, but we were in a dice game together [said jokingly]. … Just being an Obama fan — when you look at what President Obama and Vice-President Biden has done for the economy. I think so many people want to point the finger and blame them for where we’re at within the economy and I don’t think that’s fair. … You look at where we are in the economy and you see reporters talking back to the President and arguing with the President. You never would’ve seen that in life, and I think for them to be able to put up with it and continue to fight in trying to get this country back — it took longer than four years to mess the country up, so it’s not gonna be put back together and everybody’s not gonna get a job in four years. Everything that he propose to come out and change the economy, they shoot down. I like the desire to fight, to want to, in office. And I think if given the opportunity, given the second chance, maybe we’ll see some change, but who knows. So I’m just a Obama-Biden fan, and I had the opportunity to tag along with Vice-President Biden and it was a great opportunity.”

His reflections on LaDainian Tomlinson, who retired this week:

“I think LaDainian probably one of the best class-acts in football and the way he played the game was the right way. He was always one of my favorite backs. And coming up at the same time, being in Denver and competing against him week-to-week, myself him and Priest having the opportunity to compete in the same conference was amazing for me and I think it jump-started my career and gave me a different edge and a different outlook. So hats off to LaDainian for his accomplishments on and off the field. He was amazing on both and was really a human highlight reel.”

On Redskins owner Daniel Snyder:

“I think so many people got the wrong idea about Mr. Snyder. I think he’s a guy that is so dedicated to that Redskins organization and wants to badly to bring a championship to town and get the town what they want, and give Redskin Nation what they want, that a lot of people get aggravated with the change. I think he’s willing to go out and do anything and everything that needs to be done to make that organization better. And so many people criticize that. There’s a lot of owners that won’t go out and put a dime into the organization, won’t bring players in, won’t pay players … and their fans are upset. So I think Mr. Snyder does all that he can and is really just a man that has the desire to win and he wants to win at any cost. I think he’s doing everything he could to make the organization better, and the people within the organization — as far as the players — love him. I think he’s a great guy. … He’s still trying to find the pieces to the puzzle to get it on the positive side, and you have to applaud it.”

  2. I “used” to be a huge fan of Portis, I told everyone that he was the only good Clinton in Washington. I own two of his Jerseys and named one of my dogs Portis in his honor. To find out that he is a big fan of Obama is such a huge disappointment, to say the least!

  3. Jerry, get over yourself. A lot of people on the other side of the political aisle didn’t like Joe Gibbs shilling for George W. Bush, but that doesn’t mean that they still don’t appreciate his accomplishments.

  4. Jerry, you are a prime example of what is wrong with America!

  5. Political party affiliation is but one aspect of a person’s life. Basing your opinion of someone on just that aspect is as foolish as deciding you don’t like someone for the color of their hair, their manner of speaking, the state where they reside or anything else so one-dimensional.

  6. I’m sure southeast Jerome is all broken up about losing fans post “retirement” from the reliably racist and hyper religious right. I agree with every word he said about our president and am quite pleased that sheriff gonna getcha had the balls and eloquence to say it. go kick your dog or something jerry.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 22, 2012

  7. Why is Jerry ridiculed as ‘reliably racist and hyper religious’ simply because he doesn’t like Obama and his policies? It’s okay for Clinton Portis to have a political viewpoint but not Jerry? I think Obama is ruining our nation by making its citizens dependent on government rather than self reliance. And as someone who supported Herman Cain in the Republican primary, my distaste for Obama has nothing to do with the shade of his skin!

  8. Clinton can endorse any political candidate he wants to. It’s not the endorsement that’s the issue, it’s the statements he made supporting Obama (and, [insert joke here], Biden). I used to be a big fan of Portis’ but blanced at the deal that got him here which involved not only a Pro-Bowl CB in Champ Bailey (who’s still playing lights out) but a second-rounder as well. Portis then began to tail off because he got lazy, didn’t come to practice, etc., which is why you saw him coming out often and tripping over himself because he didn’t know the blocking (which he would have known had he gone to practice). And that’s when Portis’ mouth became a problem. Remember things he said like “if I were running behind the Steeler’s line” business or his statement defending Vick that dogfighting was Vick’s business?

Anyways, that mouth continues with some really idiotic statements he’s made about the biggest joke of a President since Jimmy Carter. Let’s take a look at what Portis said:

“when you look at what President Obama and Vice-President Biden has done for the economy.”

    Is he kidding? LOL. Next.

“I think so many people want to point the finger and blame them for where we’re at within the economy and I don’t think that’s fair.”

And jeez, why is that, Clinton? Have you looked at the unemployment rate lately (and wondered why you might be part of it)? It’s technically a tad bit over 8% (a figure Obama said it would never eclipse if his stimulus package passed). But the U-3 number doesn’t count literally hundreds of thousands that have given up on looking for work (know anybody like that) and I’d love to see what it will look like after he gave all those young illegals working permits.

“You look at where we are in the economy and you see reporters talking back to the President and arguing with the President. You never would’ve seen that in life, and I think for them to be able to put up with it and continue to fight in trying to get this country back”

Ummm, that happens all the time. Have you seen some speeches by Reagan when people like you were heckling him about lowering taxes?

“it took longer than four years to mess the country up, so it’s not gonna be put back together and everybody’s not gonna get a job in four years.”

Funny how Obama said exactly the opposite when he passed that stimulus. And far from making any improvements in the economy, he’s absolutely wrecked it. Do you give Jim Zorn another two or more years because he’s dealing with a team that Snyder effed up for years?

“Everything that he propose to come out and change the economy, they shoot down.”

Oh, like ObamaCare (RIP), stimulus, Ledbetter Act, etc? And why don’t you ask who stopped legislation like cap-and-trade and the Employee Free Choice Act when introduced prior to 2010 when Obama had a filibuster proof majority in the Senate and control of the House? Yeah, Clinton, it was the DEMOCRATS.

  9. I hate when sports talk goes political.

By Gstarr on Jun 23, 2012

  10. Why would anyone interview or care about what Clinton Portis has to say about anything other than football? And even football if effy. The moron can barely speak English and has a lot of moral issues by defending Michael Vick. What he said about Riggo and his confrontation with B Mitch…

Portis got paid so let him retire in peace and obscurity.

By Neil on Jun 23, 2012

  11. i said that because everything I’ve seen since the mid 90′s indicates to any sane and neutral observer that republicans are some toe-tapping under the bathroom stall how many mistresses can I have on my dying wife whilst I lead a bogus impeachment hyper religious hyper discriminatory give away the treasury to prescription drug companies start unjust wars and kill children in mess-o-potamia and sit staring in a classroom for seven minutes as the trade center burns turds. sorry it just all adds up to evil and full of shit. you guys are hilarious. and obamacare was designed by conservatives. us real liberals are rooting for its demise as well to grease the skids for single payer. go hug your bible and kiss your credit cards you fakes.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  12. and Neil nobody has the “right” to say and be heard about anything. you, me or southeast Jerome. your first question makes no sense as apparently you cared enough to read it and then comment. why ask us your dumb question? what’s your excuse?

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  13. only pig faced republican turds would spew their obscure meaningless opinions on how other folks shouldn’t spew their obscure and meaningless opinions.

  14. oh, and morons can speak. the word you want is idiot.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  15. ask obummer. he knows alot about idiots.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  16. Chris, you need to get back on your meds. I would like to hear your opinions, considering they expose you for what you are, but I can’t make sense of your schizophrenic rants. The fact is that four years are more than enough for policies to take effect, especially since he had no opposition his first two from the other party. (Fortunately the American people corrected that situation) The first warning signs where when he wrote a trillion dollar check to his political cronies-on credit that my children will have to pay back AND had the nerve to call it a stimulus-, and then dragged his own party kicking and screaming into socialized medicine(remember all those plane trips where he sweated out agreement from members of his own party?) Things are as bad or worse now than ever. If you live in the DC area then you know about Clinton Portis and his buffoonish, nonsensical ramblings. He certainly has the right to say what he wants even if his nonsense can’t stand up to a cursory fact check. In fact I want to hear from him as it is always so amusing. That is the same reason I would like you to post a coherent thought, so we could debate in a civilized manner or judge it based on its merits. Obummer made a cogent argument- even if you don’t agree, you can debate him on the merits of his words. So please, take a breath, focus and show us you can actually think.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  19. I never wanted a debate. i just wanted to read what was up with my boy portis. jerry just seemed so smug. I don’t give a shit about cap and barf or your pinhead republican wack-off shit. I just know republicans and religious zealots require idiocy and compliance in their followers. I think Obama and Jerry and Neil and obummer and pig face are all banal pillow biting assholes. portis I like.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  20. nobody cares what I think. jerry: nobody cares what you think! we’re all animals who spend 95% of our waking time staring at colored rectangles. as for your admonition about cussing…go fuck yourself. I’ll cite Chris hitchens when I say if you take away a persons right to say something, you take away EVERYBODYS right to hear it. some conservative you are. I thought you guys were anti regulation? Exercising a free vocabulary is important to us liberals.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  21. Iraq was a wrong. we all have the blood of those innocent Iraqi babies on our hands. let’s debate that! thousands died! you and I paid for it, or thanks to your hero bush, our grandkids will. let’s debate!

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  22. I love it! Much better, I knew you would come back with something entertaining. I do care what you think, Chris. I also knew you would cuss in your reply. It’s ok, cuss all you want. You are only insulting yourself. By the way, what makes you think I have a bible? Or a credit card (I do have a credit card, but I don’t believe in using credit except for my mortgage and only use it for emergencies.) Again you are not making sense. Who is taking your right to say something away?? I would fight to preserve your right to free speech. Exercising a free vocabulary is important to all but not being able to express yourself without cussing is the mark of the ignorant. Most of my liberal friends don’t feel the need to. I must say I am impressed that you used the word banal but most liberals I know would consider you intolerant for insulting someone by comparing them to homosexuals (Pillow Biters). Not in reference to me- I know it is OK for liberals to be intolerant to conservatives (considering we are evil and full of fecal matter) but towards homosexuals ala Kobe. I like Clinton too- He lets it all hang out -something most are afraid to do. I also thought he was running real well before he got hurt the last time and I wanted him to reach the 10k yard mark. But oh well, I guess we will have to agree to disagree. Try not to be so angry, its bad for your health.

By Pigfacedrepublicanturd on Jun 23, 2012

  23. Oops, sorry, I didn’t see your last post. I agree, it was a tragedy that so many died needlessly in Iraq. I do believe Saddam Hussein needed to go. He committed genocide against the Kurds and the Shites. He used poison gas on entire villages. Not even Hitler or Stalin did that. He started a horrific war with the Iranians that cost millions of lives. I too blame the Bush’s. Bush one for leaving him in power in the first gulf war, and Bush the younger for mishandling the aftermath of the invasion. When he disbanded the Iraqi army he basically made enemies of the professional fighting class. If he had just removed the senior leadership and worked with the field officers, that would have been the end of it. Arab men, especially Iraqis, prize honor very highly and he rubbed their faces in it. If he had approached the Sunni tribal leaders honorably and respectfully things would have been different.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  25. I really touched a nerve there, hmmm? pig face…your rambling. I thought I was the dullard, but my bits are infinitely more amusingly composed, erudite, and condensed. tighten it up, a few sentence enhancers may be just the thing you need.

By Chris oconnor on Jun 23, 2012

  26. Excellent! If I was insecure you would have gotten to me with the “your a little hung up on that stuff” comment. Without cussing – I know, I know- Fuck you Republicanpigfacedturd. you don’t have to say it. My name is Dale if you want to save time. Republicanpigfacedturdtakes a long to to type (at least for me). And anyway I’m kinda thin so Republicanweaselfacedturd would be more appropriate,

Here’s the problem today with our politcal debate, people belive the crap they see and hear on TV. Obummer is a prime example of it!
