Osi Umenyiora: “When he does anything in the NFL we’re gonna call him RG3. Right now he’s Bob Griffin.”July 26, 2012 – 8:15 am by Steven Cuce
Osi Umenyiora is a 2-time Super Bowl champion and he sure is talking like one in the following interview. The defensive end has had his contract issues with Giants GM Jerry Reese over the years, but is happy with the deal he has gotten heading into this season. That optimism has Osi giving out a formal notice to his new opponent: Robert Griffin III.
Umenyiora believes the rookie quarterback must earn his nickname before the media crowns him as the savior of the Washington Redskins. The point is valid and only time will tell to see if ‘Bob Griffin’ will make his new opponent pay for his words.
Osi Umenyiora joined WFAN in New York with Joe and Evan to discuss being content with his current contract with the New York Giants, the possibility of this season being his final year with the New York Giants, Michael Vick thinking that the Eagles are on the cusp of a dynasty, which NFC East team has the best chance of beating the Giants this season and Robert Griffin III being nicknamed RGIII.
Are you happy with this contract? Are you content?
“I am happy to be with the New York Giants. I am happy to be able to play out this last year. The money was very nice and I appreciate that, but I am just happy to be with the team. This is my last year here and I am just happy with the way everything has gone and I am just going to enjoy myself and help this team win.”
Have you fully accepted this may be your final year with the New York Giants?
“Honestly I don’t know. I think looking into the future in football is kind of futile. You really can’t tell what is going to happen. I might think this is going to be my last year and then something happens. I could be here three more years. I know it is not my last year playing football. I do know that, so whether it is with this team? I prefer it to be with the Giants, but we’ll just wait and see what happens.”
What are your thoughts on Michael Vick thinking that the Eagles are this burgeoning dynasty on the way?
“Yeah he is supposed to think like that. I think I said it earlier: Philadelphia has taken care of him. That organization has done great things for him and his family, so now he is just trying to repay them back. He’s doing a great job up there. He’s a great football player and he’s supposed to think that way.”
Looking in your division what team do you think has the best shot of knocking you off as far as winning the division? Philly? Dallas? Washington?
“I don’t know. I couldn’t say whether it is Philly or Dallas and then the Redskins. The Redskins beat us twice last year. The division is just so crazy that there is really no telling how things are going to play out. You just have to play and see what happens.”
How about chasing some of these quarterbacks? Michael Vick? RGIII now in the division?
“Who is this RGIII guy you guys keep talking about?” Umenyiora said. “You talking about Bob Griffin? You guys are giving him a cool nickname already and everything. When he does anything in the NFL we’re gonna call him RGIII. Right now he’s Bob Griffin.
