New Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator Pat Shurmur Confident in Michael Vick, Sees Similarities Between Vick and Nick FolesFebruary 12, 2013 – 10:00 am by Brad Gagnon
The Philadelphia Eagles have been shocking fans over and over again this offseason. They started by hiring Chip Kelly to become their new head coach well after it was reported that Kelly was out of contention. And then Kelly hired Pat Shurmur to be his offensive coordinator, despite the fact that the two come from two very different backgrounds. And then, on Monday, they signed Michael Vick to a new contract.
Pat Shurmur joined Glen and Rob on WIP in Philadelphia to discuss his hiring in Philadelphia, his fit with Chip Kelly’s team, Michael Vick, Nick Foles and the quarterback situation in Philly.
On being hired by Chip Kelly despite having a very different offensive background:
“The fundamentals of what I learned in this business were from a west-coast philosophy, but I think … you try to utilize the players that you have. You learn the foundation of how to coach offense, but it really is more homogeneous than you might think. I think folks really try to harness what you are and give it a label, and I think that’s the part that was interesting when I visited with Coach Kelly was that, even though we came from what sounds to be very diverse backgrounds in terms of what we’ve done, I think philosophically we both believe it’s important to score points and win football games. We had a common ground on how we practice the players, how we inspire them to perform. And I think that’s the important part. … Let’s sit in a room with a bunch of guys that have different experiences and let’s decide on what’s the best thing for our offense as we move forward?”
On the differences (or maybe lack thereof) between Michael Vick and Nick Foles:
“I think he [Vick] can be outstanding from the pocket. He just has the extra dimension of being able to use his legs. … And I think the same can be said for Nick. I think once he decides it’s not there, he can get yardage for us as well. Obviously not in a way that Michael can, but they’re both guys that can play from the pocket, they’re both guys that can use their feet if necessary.”
On why he’s confident in Vick:
“There’s a lot of things that happened that are fixable, in my opinion. I sensed when I visited with him — and the same could be true with Coach Kelly — that here’s a guy that was looking forward to what was going to be new about this. And I think we just felt like, based on what we’re going to try to do, to try to get him up and running.”
