Mike McCoy: Philip Rivers is a “Great Guy to Have as the Face of Your Franchise”

February 19, 2013 – 9:00 am by Brad Gagnon

Mike McCoy has done some big things with guys like Peyton Manning and Tim Tebow, so he knows a thing or two about franchise quarterbacks and the importance of having a steady leader under center. As McCoy starts his first head-coaching gig in San Diego, he’s not concerned about Philip Rivers’ ability to play that role.

And considering how quickly the Chargers were ready to commit to McCoy, it’s safe to assume that the team feels similarly confident in its new head coach.

Mike McCoy joined The Dave Logan Show on KOA in Denver to discuss his confidence in Philip Rivers as the Chargers’ franchise quarterback, the process that led to him being hired in San Diego and the importance of having a franchise quarterback in this league.

On his confidence in Philip Rivers:

“I think Philip’s gonna do a great job with us. We’re very fortunate to have him here. A very talented player and a great guy to have as the face of your franchise.”

On interviewing for several job openings while the Broncos were still in the playoffs:

“The number one focus at that point in time was to continue with football games in Denver. The organizations I spoke with, they were great about it. They understood certain parameters I laid out for them.”

On being surprised that the Chargers told him they were ready to hire him during the interview:

“To be perfectly honest, it kind of caught me off guard a little bit because I had not been here very long. By the time the interview process started, after I came out here Monday morning … when the job was offered to me I said, ‘Listen, I can’t say yes or no right now,’ because I have to go talk to my family. I had no idea where they were in the process. We had not talked to them before that point in time, so it all happened extremely fast and then I went home and made the decision to come down here.”

On the importance of having a franchise quarterback in this league:

“In this league you’ve gotta have a franchise quarterback to have a good opportunity to do great things. So it’s gonna start there.”

  2. Philip Rivers is one of the best QB’s in the league. The only problem he’s had is not being able to trust the front line.
When the line would block for him he would tear it up. The last two years has been a nightmare. Just give Philip Rivers the time and he’ll lead the Bolts to the Supebowl.
