Chris Canty was heartbroken to be a salary-cap casualty of the New York Giants this offseason. Well, he has found a new home with the Super Bowl-champion Baltimore Ravens. He signed a three-year, $8 million dollar contract that includes a $2 million dollar signing bonus.
Canty will look to replace Cory Redding’s presence along the defensive line and provide leadership in the Ravens’ locker room.
Chris Canty joined ESPN Radio New York on The Michael Kay Show to discuss Giants fans cheering him the next time he plays at MetLife Stadium, signing with the Baltimore Ravens, the vibe of the Ravens organization, being recruited as a free agent and the other teams interested in him during free agency.
When Chris Canty comes back to MetLife Stadium will the Giants fans cheer or boo you?
“I think they’ll cheer. I’ve been a good Giant and we had an opportunity to win a championship here, so I think the fans will be thankful of that.”
Why the Baltimore Ravens?
“Well, I did have some other offers on the table, but ultimately it came down to an opportunity to win another championship. And once you win one, you just want to continue to win them, so obviously this team has the ability to do that. They’ve got the quarterback position solidified with Joe Flacco locked up, so I think it was a very attractive option for me.”
What’s the vibe around the Ravens after losing all the free agents off the Super Bowl team? Do they still feel like a championship team?
“Absolutely. The coaching staff and management have a plan to solidify some of those positions where they lost some keys guys, so I am excited about it. I think it’s going to be a great opportunity. I’m comfortable with whatever they ask me to do, so I’m excited to be a Raven.”
What’s it like being recruited again as a free agent?
“I gotta be honest with you, Baltimore came out of nowhere. It’s something that’s happened in the last 48 hours and it’s one of those kinds of developments. They called earlier on Monday and they said they were interested and wanted to get me down there for a physical. I went down yesterday and we were able to come to an agreement. Today, I am a Baltimore Raven.”
Who were the other teams interested in you?
“There was Kansas City, Tennessee, Green Bay. All of those are teams I have taken visits from and there was some other teams that were interested, but at the end of the day we couldn’t make anything happen.”
