Freshly Re-Signed Redskins Tight End Fred Davis: “Trust Me, I Haven’t Played My Best Football”

April 2, 2013 – 5:40 am by Brad Gagnon

Fred Davis is young, talented and versatile, and yet for the second straight offseason the Washington Redskins are only paying him to return on a one-year contract. The problem is that Davis has had a tough time with injuries, drugs and even strange legal entanglements. But now, he’s out to make a statement.

Fred Davis joined The Sports Reporters on ESPN 980 in Washington, D.C., to discuss his return to the Redskins, his goals for 2013, his health status and the bizarre trial at which he’s been representing himself.

On having something to prove in 2013:

“I feel I’ve proven a lot, but you know what? I don’t even feel I’ve even played my best football yet, to be honest with you. One year got cut short [because] of a suspension and one year got cut short [because] of injury. Trust me, I haven’t played my best football yet. So when I say prove my value, I’m not talking about that. As far as that goes, I definitely know that I’m valuable money-wise, but I’m talking about proving it for myself, my value as one of the top tight ends in the league.”

On wanting to make teams regret passing on him:

“Any team that had a chance to get me … and they didn’t, they’re gonna regret it. Because if I play against them I’m gonna be better than the tight end on their team. That’s my goal — to be one of the top tight ends in this league. And I know I can. … I watch film of all the tight ends in the league and I just know my value.”

On how his recovery from a torn Achilles is going:

“I feel really good. I’m running, I’m doing biometric stuff, I’m doing core stuff. I’m doing a lot of stuff already. I’m way ahead of schedule. Some people say it takes 10 to 11 [months], but I really feel — after talking to my doctor he said that I’d probably be a seven-month [recovery]. … You’ve seen Terrell Suggs came back in five months after [his injury]. He probably didn’t play as explosive, but he still was a threat out there. And that was only five months, and that was early. He came back really early. I’m feeling really good right now, I’ll say that. And by the time August comes, I know definitely I’ll be 100 percent.”

On defending himself in a bizarre, drawn-out lawsuit:

“She assaulted me first. That’s what people don’t know. The whole thing is blown out of proportion. And even after I poured a drink on her, she even attacked me afterwards. The whole thing is blown out of proportion as far as her feeling like she’s the victim. I’m not gonna get into it, but the bottom line is it’s not what it seems.”
