There is a growing expectation that former Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib will end up being taken by the Buffalo Bills under the direction of his former head coach, Doug Marrone. Nassib is just happy to be entering the NFL draft.
The 23-year-old quarterback is rising up the draft boards and could be a late first-round pick. Nassib believes he’s the best quarterback in the NFL Draft, but he isn’t getting his hopes up.
Ryan Nassib joined The Dan Patrick Show to discuss not attending the NFL Draft, his expectations for Day 1 of the draft, his expectations at the start of the college football season, the last time he talked with Doug Marrone, not being surprised if the Bills didn’t take him and being the best quarterback in the draft.
Are you attending the NFL Draft?
“No I am not. I chose to come home and spend the time with my family.”
What have you been told to expect on Day 1 of the draft?
“I mean, just keep my phone open I guess. Right now there is a lot of speculation out there, but I think from what I keep hearing from my agent and sources I could go Day 1 or Day 2, but I’m sitting pretty in a good spot because the situation I am in right now. I didn’t see myself here in the beginning of the year, so I’m pretty happy.”
Going back to the beginning of the year, what were your expectations professionally?
“My biggest goal was to put myself in the best position I can to get drafted. That was one of my goals coming out, not only to have a great college season during my senior season, but my ultimate goal was to have a good enough season to put myself in a position to get drafted. And if you asked me 3-4 months ago, at the beginning of the year, if I would be in this position I’d probably tell you I wouldn’t be. I am very happy where I am right now.”
The last time you talked to your former college coach, Doug Marrone?
“I met with him and had dinner with him on Saturday night. We had a workout on Sunday morning. I had dinner with Coach Marrone, my former coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and Nathaniel Hackett, the Bills President and GM of Player Personnel. I spent a couple of days with them over the weekend.”
Would you be surprised if the Bills didn’t draft you?
“I wouldn’t be surprised. It’s a crazy process and if they don’t, hopefully I get picked by a team that thinks I am a good fit for them, and I’m just excited to have an opportunity with any team.”
