Patrick Peterson is the best cornerback in the draft and you can certainly make the argument that he is the best player overall in this year’s draft. When you look at his body of work and everything else, you can certainly see why. Peterson was a shutdown corner at LSU, he played in the best conference in college football, and was the top cornerback in college football this past season. Not only is Peterson built like a safety, but he runs like a cornerback and has shown he’s extremely dangerous on special teams as well.

Many things can happen to derail a player’s career and a lot of times success is tied to the situation that a guy is put in, but Patrick Peterson has all the talent in the world and the sky is the limit for the best cornerback in the 2011 NFL Draft despite some people thinking he is too big to play the position at the next level.

Patrick Peterson joined ESPN 850 WKNR in Cleveland with Tony Rizzo to talk about how excited he is about Thursday night, if he is sick of the entire pre-draft process, how he is dealing with all the rumors and mock drafts, and whether or not he has something to prove at the next level.

How excited he is about Thursday night

“It’s going to be crazy. It’s something that I’ve always dreamed about and it’s finally reality. It’s finally something that’s going to happen for me and my family that we have been waiting for for a long time.”

Whether or not he is sick of the whole pre-draft process:

“I’m not tired of it. It’s a fun process, but I’m definitely dying to see and waiting on where I’m going to land and where I’m going to be working for the next four or five years.”

How he deals with rumors and mock drafts:

“I’ve been dealing with it the same way I’ve been dealing with everything else. It’s an honor to even be on some people’s mock drafts and be in consideration as the best defensive player and best player all around in the draft. It really comes down to what a team needs. What they’re really looking for to turn that program around and what they’re trying to build around that team. I try not to pay too much attention to the mock drafts because all that does is build up a lot of tension and I definitely want to be calm and relaxed as much as possible leading up to tomorrow night.”

What surprised him the most during his visits:

“Nothing surprised me because I wasn’t there long enough, but all the visits were successful. I had a fun time and I wish I could do it all over again because it was just so crazy seeing these teams on Sunday just a year ago and now you’re getting scouted by these guys.”

Whether or not he always wanted to be an NFL player:

“Always wanted to be an NFL player, not only an NFL player, but someday an NFL star.”

If he feels like he has something to prove:

“I definitely have something to prove when I come into this league. All you hear about is he’s too big or he’s going to be a safety. I just can’t wait till my first game, my preseason game or my first game on Sunday to prove America wrong again. They said I wasn’t fast enough then I ran a 4.32. Now they say I’m too big and I just have to prove them wrong again.”

Is it weird that now people are talking about you being too big?

“I’m doing a lot of things that little guys can’t do. It’s all how you approach it and work at your craft. That’s something I do and that’s something that I cherish. I want to be the best at my position and that’s why I work so hard. I love when people doubt me and say he’s too big or he may not be that star that he was in college going to the next level. They work at their craft to be the best that they are right and that’s something I’m going to do as well.”

Another year, another Alabama-LSU game with major SEC and Bowl Championship Series implications.

The Crimson Tide travel to take on the Tigers on Saturday afternoon with matching 4-1 records in SEC play and 7-1 records overall. A victory for Alabama and the Crimson Tide would continue to control its destiny with Auburn still on the schedule. An LSU win and the Tigers would have to root for Alabama when that Auburn game came up on the schedule.

And if the Crimson Tide win on Saturday and then find a way to win out, there’s a decent chance they leapfrog the one-loss teams from non-automatic qualifying conferences and then get a shot to defend their national championship.

But that’s all a ways off. First Alabama must get by Les Miles and LSU.

Les Miles joined KGOW in Houston with the John and Lance to discuss the game that is always circled on the calendar, whether the Tigers got robbed by officials in last year’s game, the difference between last year’s Alabama team and this year’s team, the improvement of Crimson Tide quarterback Greg McElroy and Alabama having to prepare for his wackiness.

On the game on the schedule that everyone looks to:

“Oh yeah. I think our guys enjoy playing Alabama as much as any because it means so much to the West. Certainly Auburn’s got a nice position at this point and we’re hoping at some point in time they can stumble. To hold the position that we have in the West and make sure that if something could happen, very good, that we’re in position to take that, it has to end in victory Saturday afternoon.”

On whether he got robbed in last year’s game:

“I can’t say it wasn’t fair. I’d have to say it was fair. That catch was certainly a very significant play in that game. If you believe that, it was right around 50 yards to travel and four downs to do it. Each time you get the first down, you’re in four-down territory and you’ve got to score six or seven for the win. You’d have to think that would be the last drive of the game. If you’re a Tiger faithful, you figure we’re going to do that. That’s the assumptions. I don’t know that … we would have had to have ended that game with that possession. … We understand that was a very close ballgame and hopefully we’ll be able to change the score a little bit this Saturday.”

Difference between this year’s Alabama team and last year’s:

“This year’s team’s better on offense. Their quarterback makes more plays. I think their receiving corps is in position to be more productive during the game. Tailback’s a little bit more veteran. If there’s a place where this team may not be as good as the national championship team, it may be on defense, but I’m not sure. I think they’re as talented as they were on defense in last year’s team.”

On Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy:

“He makes good decisions. He can throw all the throws. He’s got that burst to step around the pocket and going and scrambling and getting you 10. To me, his improvement is why they’re better on offense. I see him having the opportunity to get the ball to Julio Jones and some of the wide receivers. I think he’s underrated and people don’t talk about him enough.”

On Alabama trying to prepare for him and the Tigers:

“I think preparing for me is the least of his worries. I think the issues are our players and the plays that they can make because we’ve got some players and our team is going to look forward to playing in this one.”

After winning two Bowl Championship Series National Championships in a span of five years, LSU football fans have simply come to expect greatness. They haven’t seen it the last two seasons.

Since winning the national title in 2007, the Tigers put up a 7-5 season in 2008 that included a losing record in Southeastern Conference play and a 9-4 mark last year that saw them lose just about every big game, including a loss in the Capital One Bowl.

National pundits aren’t exactly calling for LSU to contend for another championship this year, but they should be better than seasons of the recent past. And Tigers fans will certainly be expecting a contender.

LSU coach Les Miles joined WWL in New Orleans with Bobby and Deke to discuss the opening of fall camp, a defense that needs a better pass rush and an ongoing competition at quarterback.

On opening thoughts with fall camp under way:

“The key is that we develop a championship attitude. … There’s so many different ways that the chemistry of a championship team comes together and certainly it starts in the summer that they just had. We had a great summer. But it culminates in the together of two-a-days because you’re locked into a schedule and a calendar that requires you to be productive. … If I had one want going into camp, I just want to see the spirit of this team to be solid.”

On the importance of the pass rush to create consistency on defense:

“Some of the things that we’re looking at certainly involves the personnel … that come off the field, the ability to dial a blitz up more often and the good news is we think that there’s plenty of talent there to operate with. I think there’s going to be some youth, but I think that there’s an ability to have that happen and certainly the strategy involved there we worked on this spring and certainly we’ll continue to work on that this two-a-days.”

On whether quarterback Russell Shepard will have an increased role:

“I think that he came in a little behind the eight-ball. Pursuing the quarterback position just takes so much time and effort to accomplish real quality play. … I think once we got him lined up in a perimeter spot and got him on the field … he becomes a very, very significant player in those touches that can be difference-making.”

On the progression of quarterback Jordan Jefferson:

“I think Jordan Jefferson has gotten much better. I think he’s looking forward to the fall. I think he realizes that he has to play better. … There is competition there. I think he realizes it and our team realizes Jarrett Lee has continued to compete, continue to get better.”

Unluckily for Les Miles the season will not go the way he wanted. LSU will not make a BCS bowl game and the last play of the game against Ole Miss might be the way the season is remembered. One second might recap the season for Miles and that’s not good. Miles swallowed most of the blame for the meltdown of his sideline and his team in the final 64 seconds of the Tigers’ 25-23 loss to Ole Miss last Saturday. A Baton Rouge TV station ran footage Saturday night of Miles apparently signaling for quarterback Jordan Jefferson to spike the ball with one second left, then showed Miles moments later criticizing Jefferson for spiking it at the postgame news conference. That’s not good. There is a lot of competition and a lot of pressure to win in the SEC, there’s no doubt about it, but getting caught on video or just getting lost like Miles did at the end of the game is inexcusable for a coach at this level.

This is not a good thing for Miles with the fans of LSU and this might lead to the end of the road for him sooner rather than later. It sure doesn’t help that the former coach of LSU is leading his team to the SEC Championship, thanks again Nick Saban. Les Miles joined WWL 870 in New Orleans talk about the game, the team, and even took some calls from fans. That’s not always safe. (In the interview he sounds like he is speaking at a funeral)

Asked what things stood out in that game that need to be fixed:

“First off the head coach is not above criticism and fixing things and getting them right. From 1:32, the back end of the game, I need to manage that better. I told my team that the corrections will be made by me and I expect our team, each guy, will get this film and do the same. You have to go forward. We play too quality of a schedule; this next team is a very talented team. You have to improve and go forward.”

Asked about the last drive and if the team thought they had a time out left:

“I am sure that they did. If you look up at the scoreboard, you would recognize that there was a timeout on the board. There was not. We used our third timeout with the last timeout called. I would have loved to call a timeout at that point. I knew that I was without one. I told Jordan frankly he did what we asked him to do, the clocking, we can’t do that. You can’t win it with that call.”

Asked if this was top of the list difficult wise for him:

“Nothing professionally could compare to this one. This was a very difficult loss to take certainly when you point the finger at me, the head coach. There are some things personally; everybody in our lives needs to know how to handle things personally. It comes in all forms. Those days mark your life. If you handle adversity well, you will enjoy tough times.”

Listen to Les Miles with Bobby Hebert and Deke on WWL AM 870 in New Orleans

I know it sounds simple, but he gets his players to play hard for him. That’s a big part of coaching these days and his players go to the mat for him. LSU beat Butler on Thursday 75-71behind one of the most dynamic scorers in the country in Marcus Thornton.

On Saturday, they play the team favored to win the National Championship in North Carolina and if Ty Lawson is out they have a legitimate shot to beat the Tar Heels.

Trent Johnson joined Tirico and Van Pelt on ESPN Radio after their victory over Butler.

Was he worried about the lack of tournament experience his team has?

“There was some concern going in that we’d be able to relax, settle down and play, but it also helps to have a guy the caliber of player Marcus Thornton is. He makes coaching look easy.”

If I am the Memphis Tigers, I’m not too upset about not getting a #1 seed after seeing this draw in the Western Regional. Unlike some of the other regions, there doesn’t really appear to be more than a handful of teams that are more than extreme long shots to win four games and make a Final Four. Maryland, Texas A&M, and Utah State could pull off first round upsets as double digit seeds, but I just don’t see Missouri as a #3 seed being consistent enough to string together four straight. Same with Washington and Purdue. We’ll see though – don’t tell that to either John Calipari or Jim Calhoun, the coaches of the Memphis Tigers and UCONN Huskies. As far as they’re concerned, each and every game until they either cut down the nets or are eliminated will be their hardest and most important games of the season. Odds to win the regional are after the interviews, compliments of Bodog, www.BodogLife.com.

Reason why #1 seed doesn’t make it to the Final Four: Connecticut just isn’t as good without Jerome Dyson. His superior shooting opened up everything on offense. Foul trouble to Haseem Thabeet could be troubling as well.

Best bet in the first round: Memphis – 19 1/2 over Cal State Northridge

Player I’m most looking forward to playing in the NBA: Jerel McNeal of Marquette. A bit of a tweener in that’s he’s too small to play point guard and doesn’t have true point guard skills, but there’s always a role for guys that can defend like him and are clutch shooters. Would be perfect if he joined a team with a big point guard like Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, or Derrick Rose.

Prediction for this bracket: Memphis. Calipari just rebuilds destitute programs and then reloads year after year. This may be his best defensive team yet. If Dyson wasn’t injured, I may have picked Connecticut to win the whole thing. Sleeper pick would be Washington.

At the start of the year, most pundits thought that the North Carolina Tar Heels, led by senior All-American Tyler Hansbrough, would be cutting down the nets come April. At one point, there was even talk of the ‘Heels navigating a tough non-conference and competitive ACC schedule undefeated. That of course didn’t happen, but here we are, with the tournament set to tip-off this week, and North Carolina is where they want to be, with a #1 seed in the most geographically favorable region. Standing in there way are a tough Oklahoma squad, led by PF Blake Griffin, one of just a handful of guys in the game who can hang with Hansbrough; and a dangerous, but perhaps tired #3 seed in Syracuse, who expended an awful lot of energy in the Big East Tournament. Will they have enough left in the tank to muster a run at a Final Four? Can John Beilein complete the resurrection of the once proud Michigan program with a run like the ones he was able to lead while at West Virginia? Gonzaga, Illinois and Arizona State all are dangerous, and don’t blink an eye if you’re guarding Temple’s Dionte Christmas, perhaps the most dangerous scorer in this bracket that nobody’s really heard about. Odds to win the South Regional can be found after the interviews, compliments of Bodog, www.BodogLife.com.

Reason why #1 seed doesn’t make it to the Final Four: If Ty Lawson isn’t close to a 100%, North Carolina is very beatable. Roy Williams should rest him for at least the first game against Radford.

Best bet in the first round: Butler + 2 1/2 over LSU

Player I’m most looking forward to playing in the NBA: Johnny Flynn. I’m biased as a Syracuse grad, but I think he’s the best point guard in the country. Deceptively strong with a better jumper than most point guards. I hope he stays another year, but I doubt it.

Prediction for this bracket: North Carolina, they’re just too deep. However, if Lawson is still hobbled, I’ll go with Syracuse. Sleeper pick would be Gonzaga.
