While he was at Boise State, Kellen Moore started 52 games as the Broncos quarterback. He won a whopping 49 of them, making him the winningest college football quarterback in Division One history. Unfortunately that renders itself meaningless at the next level. As the NFL Draft approaches, Moore’s future is a bit cloudy and he has been pushed down the board when it comes to quarterback rankings in this year’s draft class. There is no denying that he was one of the best college quarterbacks of all-time and the best player to ever play on the “smurf turf,” but he doesn’t look the part of an NFL quarterback and I would not be comfortbale with him as my starter or backup at the next level. Moore’s arm isn’t strong enough, he didn’t play against great competition and he is undersized. There are a lot of things working against Moore during the process but it should be mentioned that he was able to prove the naysayers wrong coming out of high school and will look to do that again, if he even gets a shot at the next level.

Kellen Moore joined Fox Sports Radio with Petros and Money to talk about what he plans on doing during the days of the draft, on the pre-draft process, whether he thinks the evaluation process prior to the draft is fair, whether the teams have been asking him about arm strength, what his “Plan B” is if he doesn’t make it at the next level, and how tough is to not have control in the draft process.

What he plans on doing during the draft:

“Go back home. Go back to Washington where I grew up. Go back to the parent’s house for the weekend with a chance to get around family, hang out, see them for a little while, and we will enjoy the draft.”

On the pre-draft process:

“It’s an interesting situation. You enjoy it, you meet new people, and certainly there’s a lot of evaluations and just looking at every aspect of you as a person, as a football player, and it’s quite interesting. A lot of stuff you have to do once in your life and then after that you get to be a football player again so I’m very excited about that.”

Whether the evaluation process prior to the draft is fair:

“It’s probably a necessary process just because this is a big investment. The NFL is a big business and they want to evaluate the best they can and I think there’s just so many checkmark things along the process that you have to make sure of and dot their I’s and cross their t’s to make sure they are making accurate decisions.”

Whether the teams have been asking him about arm strength:

“Not a whole lot. They can figure that stuff out on tape. These coaches, they all know what they’re doing. They just want to get to know you as a person and go through that process. For some people they are going to evaluate you differently and there’s a lot of different opinions out there. You just have to figure out which team suits you best.”

What his “Plan B” is if he doesn’t make it in the NFL:

“We’ll have to see. Coach Pete (Chris Petersen) always has a line that’s called ‘be here now.’ Just focus on the task at hand and you know all I’m worried about is this process. Certainly beyond this as you move forward we’ll see what journeys it takes you, probably will always be associated with football in some form or fashion, whether playing probably or coaching because that is in my family and that’s something that I will probably be doing in the future.”

On the idea of not having control in the draft process:

“You have to quickly realize that you have no control. You’ve got 53 games of tape which is probably too much for some of these coaches to watch and nitpick but you have plenty of tape, you’ve been at the Senior Bowl, been at the Combine, done a lot of things at this point you have no control over it so relax and enjoy it and be a fan and eventually then you’ll get a call on the phone and see where it takes you.”

Kellen Moore may have the record for the most wins ever for a college quarterback at the Division I level, but the Broncos signal caller is coming off a heartbreaking loss to the TCU Horned Frogs last Saturday. The 36-35 defeat essentially put an end to Moore’s last chance at ever being in a BCS Championship game. It’s painful to think that Moore has seen his teams’ BCS Championship hopes go down the tubes with his kickers missing makeable field goals in back-to-back seasons now. Last season, Kyle Brotzman missed two field goals and Boise State fell on the road to Nevada. Last Saturday, Dan Goodale’s missed a 39-yard kick that ruined the Broncos chance at achieving perfection.

It’s been a remarkable run for Moore since his career began in Boise State. He had the attention of the college football world and almost got his underdog team a chance at BCS glory.

Kellen Moore joined The Dan Patrick Show to discuss his feelings after the tough loss to TCU on Saturday evening, what, if anything, he takes from the loss to TCU outside of the Broncos’ BCS hopes being dashed, the chances of Boise State making the BCS Championship had the Broncos not lost to TCU, passing Colt McCoy for the most wins all-time as a college quarterback, his vote for the Heisman Trophy, what Andrew Luck does better than him, his future plans after college and possibly playing in the NFL.

How do you feel today coming off the loss?

“Not too bad. We are doing alright.”

Obviously there is the kick that was missed at the end of the game against TCU, but what else do you take from that game? Anything positive you take away from that game?

“Yeah I think certainly there is a lot of positives. I don’t think we concern ourselves too much with the kick and the other things. I think you kind of look back at your own personal performance or situations and see what you could have done better earlier in the game to make it so it didn’t come down to that.”

Do you feel if you guys would have ran the table you would have been worthy to be in the BCS Championship game?

“[Laughs] Oh man Dan you are putting me on the spot here. [Dan Patrick: Well the season is already shot. You got a bowl game coming up. You don't owe the BCS anything?] Hey I mean we’ll see how the season ends. That’s a different conversation at the end of the year, but I think we got all the talent in the world on our team. I think we are still capable of some good things. One loss is one loss. If we can finish this thing off right and not too many teams can say they had one loss in a season.”

How proud are you to pass Colt McCoy for the most all-time wins as a college quarterback? What does that mean?

“I think it means you are very fortunate to play for four years and play on a highly successful team. It’s pretty neat. Any time your name is around Colt McCoy you know something is going right.”

Who gets your Heisman Trophy vote?

“I think still Andrew Luck. Andrew has played well. He has carried that team. They got more games to play and they’ll play in a big bowl game and have a great opportunity.”

What does Andrew Luck do better than you?

“I think he’s got a lot of tools. He does a great job managing that offense. Even with the run game he’s so involved with it. He’s checking and alerting plays. I think he does a great job. He’s fun to watch.”

What do you think your future is?

“I think certainly try to see if you can play a little longer. Enjoy that. Down the road maybe getting into coaching or something.”

Do you plan on playing in the NFL?

“Certainly. You gotta give it a shot. I think I am capable of it. I think I can do some things, but we’ll see down the road what happens.”

Despite not playing this past weekend, the Boise State Broncos slipped in the Bowl Championship Series standings. The Broncos are off to a 7-0 start, and have made it look relatively easy in the process. As Georgia, who Boise State beat in the season opener, continues to win, it’s been assumed that the Broncos would look even more favorable in the eyes of both human voters and in the computers calculations.

For what seems like the umpteenth year in a row, here we ere we are talking about the Broncos and where they fit in the national championship picture. They went undefeated with Kellen Moore — then a sophomore — at quarterback two years ago and didn’t get a chance to play for the national championship. Now, the toughest challenge standing in the way appears to be TCU, but Boise State looks like it’ll need some help if things are going to be different this time around.

Kellen Moore joined 950 KJR in Seattle with Mitch Levy to discuss the disappointment of falling behind Stanford in the BCS despite not even playing, how important it is to him to play for a national championship after the career he’s had at Boise State, how disappointed he’d be in a couple years if he has to think back about never getting that opportunity, how this Boise State team stacks up to the others he’s been a part of, and being right in the thick of things in the Heisman Trophy race.

How disappointing is it to see Stanford leaping over you guys in the BCS?:

“Really, I don’t think we concern ourselves too much with it. I don’t watch that show or really pay attention to it. Last year is a great example of ours. There was probably a lot of debate whether we should’ve had an opportunity and we lose a game late in the year and it doesn’t really matter at that point. I think once the season comes to an end, we’ll see where we stand and see what opportunities we have.”

How important is it to you that you get a chance to play for a national championship?:

“Anyone playing college football, who doesn’t want to play for a national championship and have those opportunities? That’s something certainly all of us have aspirations to do. I think one thing we quickly realize right now is that it’s out of our control, essentially. We can win all our games and do whatever we’ve got to do and that thing comes from different people. Our goal is simply conference championship and win the bowl game.”

If you guys go undefeated this year but don’t make the championship game, how disappointing will that be, particularly when you look back on it a couple years from now?:

“I think certainly we’d love the opportunity. Who doesn’t? I think we’ve been very fortunate to have a lot of success. … [In 2009] maybe we had an opportunity. We finished undefeated and that’s left for other people to discuss because obviously that’s the system that we play in. Down the road, looking back, you’d love an opportunity to go challenge yourself against the best of the best, week-in and week-out, and see who comes out on top.”

Have all these successful Boise State teams you’ve been a part of been similar or does one stand out amongst the rest?:

“I think we’ve kind of had the last few years, have a lot of the same guys. Our class, the class we have right now, and the previous class which just got done playing last year, it kind of felt like we’d been playing for a while. … A lot of us were playing that freshman, sophomore year. … We lost all those guys this year but we’ve got some talented guys now. Because of all of the success we’ve had a lot of opportunities to bring in some big-time players.”

Would this team be the best of the group?:

“Yeah, I think it’s got potential. We’re only seven weeks in and we’ll have to see where we get better. We’ve got a couple challenges ahead of ourselves. We have a TCU coming in here in two weeks that we’ve had great battles with the last two years. … We certainly think we’re capable of some great things this year.”

How important is it to you to be a Heisman contender?:

“I think it’s a fun opportunity. … How many guys get an opportunity to play for four years, especially in a program like this that’s had a lot of success? I think one thing you quickly realize is all these awards, they go to guys who are on very successful teams. … If you’re on a team that’s 6-6, nobody cares about you. … It really just comes down to your team performance.”

How do you think you compare to Andrew Luck?:

“I don’t really know. That’s probably for some other people to figure that whole situation out. I think he’s as good as anyone in the country and deserves all the recognition.”

Pat Forde, formerly a college football columnist for ESPN, made his debut with Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday. It certainly created some buzz in on the media front as he seemed to do a whirlwind tour of interviews across the country. Forde was inevitably asked about ESPN and whether or not the media giant might be one of the driving forces behind conference realignment in college sports. Unfortunately, he can’t really give us a clear answer. But it’s not because he’s not allowed to talk about it or afraid to speak candidly. He simply doesn’t know.

Seems pretty secretive and little fishy, but then again, so is the whole realignment process. Forde does believe, however, that we’re currently in an unequivocally disgusting chapter for college sports. I couldn’t agree more.

Pat Forde joined XTRA 910 in Phoenix with Bickley and MJ to discuss ESPN’s involvement in conference realignment, why conference realignment is bad, if it could lead to a playoff system, the battle of two tremendous defenses at LSU and Alabama this weekend and Boise State’s chances of making the national championship game.

Are ESPN and networks who are driven by ratings actually the ones who are driving realignment in college football?:

“You know, it’s a great question and a legitimate question. I wish I knew the answer. One of the strange dynamics of working there is, you rarely talk to those guys about that stuff. It was somewhat frustrating because you’re trying to chase the news and you figure that those guys knew what was going on, but there was kind of that wall between us and the programming folks who were dealing with these people. I could never get a very good sense of how involved they were. Are they involved with helping people make their schedules, year-in and year-out? Yes. Do they have relationships that are tight enough to the point where they might be called into an advisory capacity? I don’t think that’s out of the question at all. … Whether they were calling shots, I honestly wish I knew or had a better idea.”

What do you think the long-term effects of this realignment era are going to be?:

“I think it’s, in general, horrible for college sports. I think this has been a disgusting chapter, really, in the whole thing. I don’t think realignment is good. I think it has only exacerbated the mercenary nature of this and college sports was supposed to be different than pro sports. I’m not naive here, but still it seems more and more like pro sports in every single way. The geography of it doesn’t make sense. The rivalries that are lost, the traditions that are lost, the unique flavor of conferences goes away. … And we’re still not sure where it’s going to end.”

Do you buy that when all this realignment is over, we get closer to a playoff system?:

“I’m completely 100 percent pro-playoff, but the analogy I’ve been using is if you decide to remodel the bathroom and then tear down the entire house around the bathroom. I think there’s a better way to do it. … The momentum and pressure is there toward a playoff and we can get there under any circumstances, not just necessarily by consolidating into four power conferences.”

Does LSU or Alabama have the better defense going forward?:

“That’s a great question. They’re both so good. They’re just lights-out. … This is going to be tough-man football. It’s fast, physical. It’s going to be a lot of handing off between the trenches and a lot of guys just pounding the snot out of each other. It’s going to be fun if you like old-school, slobber-knocking football. From that standpoint, I think this is going to be great. Which one’s better? I don’t know. I think LSU’s played better offenses so far, but Alabama has not allowed a point in the second half in more than a month.”

Is there any way you think Boise State can find itself in the national championship game this year?:

“I think it’s going to be an uphill battle. I’ve been driving the Boise bus for a couple of years now because I’m just stunned at the way people want to dismiss them when the evidence on the field is they’re really good. I don’t think this Boise team is as good as last year’s team, yet they may still go undefeated. … If Stanford loses to Oregon, Oklahoma State loses to Oklahoma, both things that could well happen, but if LSU loses a close one on the road to Alabama, there’s going to be a lot of sentiment for a rematch, or even the other way around. … That’s going to be a tough argument for a Boise to win, given the strength of schedule. It’s just not there for them.”

SEASON SUMMARY

Alabama wins its second championship in the last three seasons – and the SEC’s sixth straight BCS title – by topping Oklahoma in the BCS Championship 56.5% of the time and by a score of 27.6 – 23.1. Despite losing ultra-efficient quarterback Greg McElroy and receiving threat Julio Jones, Alabama is stacked. The Crimson Tide appears to have the best offensive line, running back and defense in the nation. Generally, the most likely team in the country to go undefeated is a non-BCS-AQ school (like TCU, Boise State, Houston, etc.). This year, that distinction goes to the SEC’s best.

In other BCS Bowls, the inaugural Big Ten Championship game winner, Wisconsin falls to new Pac-12 champion Oregon in a Rose Bowl shootout 41-31. Boise State, led by Kellen Moore, carries the flag of the BCS non-AQ schools into the Sugar Bowl where the Broncos take out SEC runner-up South Carolina 27-25. ACC winner Florida State shuts down Big East champion West Virginia 23-14 in the Orange Bowl. And Big 12 runner-up Texas A&M spoils Brian Kelly and Notre Dame’s return to a BCS game with a 31-26 victory. Perennial BCS Bowl contender LSU and offensive power house Oklahoma State may not make BCS Bowls despite being top ten teams (two teams from the SEC and Big 12 are already in), but the Tigers and Cowboys turn the Cotton Bowl into the next best match-up, one that LSU wins 37-30. Stumbling from last year’s ranks, defending champion Auburn faces Houston in the Liberty Bowl, while TCU makes the Las Vegas Bowl against Cal. And finally, in an interesting rematch from last season’s Sugar Bowl, Ohio State and Arkansas lose their starting quarterbacks, yet improve over the season to ultimately meet up in the Outback Bowl.

For the better part of a decade, the Boise State Broncos have been busting their way into the Bowl Championship Series from the Western Athletic Conference. Not anymore.

That’s not to say coach Chris Petersen and the Broncos won’t be busting up the BCS. They’ll open up the college football season ranked No. 7 in the Coaches Poll thanks to a Heisman-hopeful quarterback in Kellen Moore. But to get there they’ll have to get through their first season in the Mountain West unscathed. That means not only beating the likes of TCU and Air Force, but also a bunch of other teams they aren’t used to scouting. Oh, and there’s that pesky Georgia game staring them down in the opener.

Chris Petersen joined Fox Sports Radio with Petros and Money to discuss the new Mountain West rules that won’t allow them to wear blue uniforms on the blue turf, the expected competition of the Mountain West, if the program should attempt to join a BCS league, the challenges of kicking off a season against a team like Georgia and the greatness of Kellen Moore.

On the Mountain West’s rule that they can’t wear the all-blue uniforms on the blue turf:

“We’ve got some different options, but I think the one thing that would not fly in Boise, Idaho, is pulling out the blue turf here. That option’s off the table. Fortunately for us, Nike has been so awesome to us and they’ve created a bunch of different uniforms. And so we have different color combinations and we’ll probably work them all.”

Explain a little more about that new rule:

“I think it was a little bit of [coaches complaining]. When you’re here in person, it’s not an issue. I know it looks different on the TV. It does, I’ve seen it myself and I know it looks different. I think the big issue is a little bit of film, but it’s not so much, it’s a little bit of our stadium. Our end zone cameras are kind of back a ways and so sometimes it is tough even for us to see. But it’s tough for us to see our opponents as well. … We can’t wear blue for the league games. If someone’s out of our league and they come here, we’ll probably be in all blue.”

How do you expect the competition to be in your first year in the Mountain West?:

“I think top to bottom, the Mountain West Conference, for us, is going to be much more difficult. I think our fans are really excited, I think people on the outside are excited about it. But, really, as coaches in this program, our job just got a lot more difficult for us to be doing what we did in the past. There’s a lot of little subtleties in this schedule that I think people take for granted.”

Now that the MW isn’t comprised of the teams you expected, should you try to move into a BCS conference?:

“I really don’t know. We can say what we would like, but you’ve got to be invited. I think we’re really happy with the Mountain West. I think when Fresno, Nevada and Hawaii come into the league next year, I think it’s going to be a really good, strong, tough league. It’s going to be definitely more difficult than it was in the past for us.”

What are the challenges and benefits of playing a BCS-conference program to kick off the season? (Georgia this year):

“I think the challenges are obvious coming right out is that we’re playing a great program with tremendous tradition, really good players and a great coaching staff. I think Georgia’s in a great position because they’re kind of laying in the weeds. Their record wasn’t exactly what they wanted it to be last year, but if you look at it closely, they were in every game in the SEC conference, they were all decided by less than seven points. They were right there, they just didn’t make a couple plays, and they’ve got a lot of guys coming back.”

Is Kellen Moore the greatest player in school history?:

“I’d like to answer that after this next year, but for the three years he’s been with us, I think he’s hard to beat. He’s probably the best college football player certainly that I’ve been around. You talk about playing at that consistent, high level. He just hasn’t had a bad game at Boise State since he’s been here. … If he has a bad throw or a bad decision, we’re kind of like, ‘What was that?’”

There’s no doubting that the Georgia Bulldogs fell flat last year, finishing just 6-7 and winning just three games in the Southeastern Conference. It was the first losing season in Mark Richt’s decade-long career and the head coach admits he thinks his program lost some of its national luster because of it.

The coaches showed the program some respect by putting the Bulldogs in the top 25 in their preseason poll, but to get back on the national scene, the Bulldogs could help themselves by having a great start to the season. Georgia opens with a nationally prominent game against top-10 team Boise State, then backs it right up with SEC title contender South Carolina. Make it through that gauntlet and the program might already be restored in the eyes of those forgetting it.

Mark Richt joined WCNN in Atlanta with The Rude Awakening to discuss playing Boise in the season opener, how that game got scheduled, what Georgia has to do to be better this year, the polarizing ways of Tim Tebow and what it would be like to start the year 2-0.

Why did you schedule Boise State in the opener?:

“I think we needed to play somebody that would get our attention, would get the fanbase’s attention and even the college football world’s attention. We certainly fell short of what we were hoping for a year ago. We declined in our record, I think we declined in how people perceived our program and a game like that can jump-start you. And that’s what we’re trying to do.”

On the process of how the Boise State game was set up:

“[The athletic director] came to me with that and he was like, ‘Well, that quarterback’s a senior and he’s leaving.’ I really didn’t look at it. I knew that he had been there a long enough time that he was probably on the way out. After we signed on the dotted line, then I went and looked at the depth chart and realized he was still there. Then I was hoping he would turn pro early and he didn’t do that.”

Where do you have to be better to get off to the start that you want?:

“I just think overall we’ve got to play harder and faster. I think we’ve got to be able to make plays in the fourth quarter. Those are the two main things for me. As I look back, did we play fast enough every single down? I don’t think we did. Did we finish like we should in the fourth quarter? Did we make the plays in the fourth quarter that needed to be made? … We didn’t do that. … Individually, everybody’s just got to get better and better and better as they go.”

Having coached against him in college, what makes Tim Tebow so polarizing?:

“The thing about Tebow is I think he has the wonderful ability to focus on the things that are important in life. Number one, his faith and his love for the lord is paramount. There’s nothing wrong with that, that’s very healthy. … I think maybe sometimes that makes people upset. But the bottom line is he’s not a cookie-cutter quarterback in the NFL. He’s different. But he’s got some skill sets that other guys don’t have and he’s got some unbelievable characteristics that some guys don’t have. … I’m a Tebow fan. I’ve had some debates before the draft, should he play quarterback or should he play something else? My best bet is he’s going to be a great quarterback in the NFL before all is said and done.”

You guys are flying under the radar, but if you can win the first two games, they’ll be talking about you as a title contender:

“We’ll see what happens. I hope we have that problem. We’ll just see. That’d be all right with me.”

Bill Hancock believes the United States government has plenty more to worry about than college football, but that doesn’t mean he’s not looking forward to a meeting with the Justice Department later this summer. Hancock, the executive director of the BCS, said late last week that the Justice Department had requested a background briefing on the BCS after receiving several requests to conduct an anti-trust investigation.

Hancock is certainly no stranger to defending the BCS and his argument has never really changed. He believes the current BCS format is the best because it ensures the top two teams play for the national championship, gives players a rewarding end-of-season experience and preserves the importance of the regular season.

But advocates for a playoff system seem to multiply by the day and now the Justice Department would like to know why college football doesn’t have a playoff like most other college sports. Hancock and the BCS were given the voluntary option to be a part of the process, and in the following interview Hancock explains why he eagerly accepted.

Bill Hancock joined 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh with Vinnie and Cook to discuss the reaction he receives from fans regarding the BCS, why it’s better than a playoff system, the argument that it keeps teams from non-BCS conferences from playing for a championship, his upcoming meeting with the Justice Department, if it’s unfair that politicians are getting involved, how the recent Ohio State news will affect college football and why it will continue to thrive despite that news.

What kind of reaction does he get from fans when they talk with him about the BCS?:

“It’s mixed. People that are very close to college football believe in the system we have and know this is a game for students. People that are not quite as close to it would usually prefer an NFL-style playoff. I love talking about it.”

Why is what we have now better than a playoff system?:

“It’s better, in our opinion, because it guarantees the matchup of the top two teams in the bowl system, while keeping the bowls, which are a terrific reward for the athletes. Of course there’s the tradition of the bowls also, but to me the reward for the athletes is paramount. I love the basketball tournament. I was able to run it for a long time. I loved it; I still love it. But football and basketball are different. If we had a playoff in football, it would be a whole series of one-night business trips for the athletes. … What football offers them now is a multi-day experience in a different culture where they can relax and end their season with one of the great, traditional experiences in sports. … Also, to protect the regular season. We have the best regular season of any sport.”

What about those who argue that the current system is flawed to a point where you might not actually get the two best teams, or that it’s debatable?:

“That makes for a good hot-stove league conversation. But I really think if Boise State had made either of those two field goals against Nevada and somebody else had slipped, that an undefeated Boise State would’ve been in the championship game last year. They were this close to making it. I think it’s going to happen someday.”

What is he preparing to run into when he meets with the Department of Justice?:

“I think it will be fascinating. I’m looking forward to it. I think it’s an opportunity for us to make it clear to those folks how the BCS was created and why and how it operates and all the benefits it’s brought to college football. Would I rather not go? Yeah, but you know when they called they were very nice and they said this is voluntary.”

Is it unfair that politicians are starting to get involved with this?:

“I’ve said before and I still feel this way, with all the challenges facing the country … I do think the government has more important things on it’s plate, but I do understand the political reasons for wanting to poke around in college football. What I intend to do is just go up and tell the justice people, ‘Hey, we are so much better than we’ve ever been before. College football’s more popular, there’s more access to the top level of college football than ever before, and that’s all come because of the BCS.’”

His thoughts on the recent news at Ohio State and how it affects college football:

“We all lose when something like that happens. I have known Coach Tressel through the years and respected him, but I don’t know the details. … But we absolutely all lose when something like that happens. I also think it’s unfair to paint innocent people with the same brush. I’ve heard those things that you and others have heard with people saying, ‘It’s going on everywhere.’ Well, who knows that? How do people know that? If it is, then the NCAA needs to stop that, but I just don’t think it’s happening quote, unquote, everywhere.”

Is college football strong enough to survive this?:

“Oh absolutely. This game is so popular. It’s like, can the popularity keep growing? Can it grow to the sky. … Attendance is up by 35 percent over the last 20 years, television ratings are going through the roof. It’s a remarkably popular game.”

Are we getting closer to a day when college athletes will be paid?:

“I don’t think so. I don’t see that. Those of us who have had children go to college know that there is a great deal of value in a college education that all the athletes receive. I’m intrigued by the possibility of increasing the benefits to match the full cost of tuition. … I do worry about where the money would come from at come schools, but I do not think we will go down the road toward pay for play. I certainly hope not.”

Just when you thought you’d seen it all — the blue turf at Boise State, the red now at Eastern Washington — something else comes along to win the battle. In this case, you can consider Central Arkansas as the new front-runner in the race for the most annoying turf in college football.

The folks at Central Arkansas, which plays at the Football Championship Subdivision level, were already renovating their stadium, and since they were putting in synthetic turf, they figured they might as well look into whether they could make a publicity stunt out of it. Well, chalk that up as a victory.

Central Arkansas is working to debut a turf that is purple and gray, alternating every five yards between colors. I wish I was making that last sentence up.

Central Arkansas athletic director Brad Teague joined 790 The Zone in Atlanta with Barnhart and Durham to discuss how the school decided to switch to the new colored turf, what went into the process, what the other options were and how the decision has gained the school notoriety.

How did they come up with the idea to have purple and gray field turf?:

“Everybody knows Boise State, they’ve had their blue turf for over a decade. Eastern Washington followed suit more recently with a full red turf. Just recently, we decided we were going to spend the money and change to a synthetic turf. In doing so, we said, ‘This is a good opportunity to be different. Do we want to do it?’ The decision was, yes, let’s be unique, let’s garner some recognition for an FCS school that we wouldn’t get otherwise.”

What goes into making a decision like that?:

“This was not a decision we just made on a whim. … We had a big feedback session and brought in donors of all types, brought in corporate sponsors, brought in our football coaches, student athletes, student body, faculty and staff. We actually voted on five different options and this was the option that won out significantly over all others.”

What were the others?:

“We had the green field and then we had four different purple and gray options. One was an all purple field. We had alternating every 10 yards instead of five yards, which was the winning decision. And then we had what we called the purple zones. Instead of the red zone, 20-yard lines in, we had purple 20-yard lines in. … We went with the winning entry, which was every five yards, and it really looks sharp and looks good. Certainly, it’s going to be different. Playing on the field and practicing on the field is going to be a change.”

On how the decision has gained Central Arkansas more notoriety:

“We have not received near the attention for those two items [honoring former player Scottie Pippen and having Arkansas great Corliss Williamson as basketball coach] as we have for this turf. In 48 hours, we had 200,000 views on our YouTube video. The most views we’ve ever had for any event was less than 2,000. … It’s just been a lot of fun attention. We’ve had 15,000 new visitors who have never visited our website before. … Of course, there are certainly people who don’t like the fact that we’ve gone purple and gray. … But I think, at the end of the day, when they see that we’re getting this attention and our televised games will also probably get us some recognition on major networks throughout the season, I think they’ll understand … it was a good decision.”

I watch football like it’s my job. Mostly because it is my job. I’ve seen countless games this season, whether live and in person or on TV. None of them were better than the Boise State-Nevada game on Friday. I just wish more people could have stayed up to see it.

If you missed it — and somehow didn’t watch any highlights over the weekend — Nevada pulled off an entertaining comeback, only to see Boise State’s deep pass set up a short game-winning field goal. However, that chip shot was missed, sending the game to overtime. There, the Broncos missed another field goal, the Wolf Pack did not and previously undefeated Boise State saw its national championship dreams end in heartbreak.

Seriously, find somebody who DVR’d it. It’s worth your time.

Nevada coach Chris Ault joined ESPN Radio with Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo to discuss the swings of emotion in the final minutes of the upset, the incredible finish by senior quarterback Colin Kaepernick, if Kaepernick can make it as a pro, whether he felt bad for Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman and whether he’ll continue coaching or this is a good way to go out.

On the swings of emotion in the final minutes:

“That point was just unbelievable when [Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore] and Titus [Young] made the catch. They’re two great players. We weren’t in position. Our DBs weren’t deep enough and really I was looking for somebody to choke. I was afraid your cameras would catch me, so I didn’t do it. It was one of those deals. And their kicker is as good as there is out here in the West. He’s a terrific, terrific kicker and it’s 26 yards and right in front of the goalpost and you’re just deflated. We worked so hard to get where we were, to do what we hoped we could do and to have that happen with one second left was unbelievable. When he missed it, of course the world lit up again. On our sideline, all of our guys said, ‘This is it. We’ve got the chance and we’ve got to take advantage of it.’”

On his seniors finally beating Boise State:

“I’m so proud of our seniors because we had been semi-close the last couple of years with some chances and didn’t finish. For [Kaepernick] and those seniors, they are deserving. They paid their prices to this company and I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am for Kaep. He is one of the greatest young people that I’ve ever had the pleasure of coaching.”

On whether Kaepernick is a pro quarterback:

“There’s no question about it. There isn’t. I’m gonna tell you this now, there’s no question about it. Not only will he be a pro, but I think he’s one of those guys that all of the sudden they say, ‘You know, we didn’t realize his potential as a passer.’ He has really gone from being a thrower to a passer. He is as good mind-wise as any college quarterback in the country. Absolutely, we’ll see him playing on Sundays.”

On Boise State’s kicker missing two memorable kicks:

“It has not happened and I’ve been in it long enough to have the experience with us and our players, I think [Boise State coach Chris Petersen] did a great job because it wasn’t about one play costing them the game. Obviously it was a big play, but there were other opportunities. And the way I look at it, I felt Boise was lucky to have that last shot and it was due to our poor play. You look at that and then you go into the overtime and that’s a whole different mindset for all the players. I know this, he’s a tremendous young man, he’ll do well and he’ll come out of it.”

On whether this was the moment to go out on or he will continue coaching:

“People say, ‘Are you having fun?’ No. … It’s miserable fun you have as a coach. But the competition, being around these young people, it just keeps you going. I’ve got as much enthusiasm as any assistant coach in the country and maybe more than most. Yeah, the fire’s still burning and games like that they just fan the flames.”
