The Penn State scandal and Joe Paterno’s firing have rocked college football and will continue to be the major story for some time. That said, on Saturday, there’s still a game to be played as the Nittany Lions host the Nebraska Cornhuskers. And someone has the dubious distinction of having to broadcast that game.

The ESPN crew includes Dave Pasch, Urban Meyer and Chris Spielman, the latter of which says the crew is going into uncharted territory with this game — and it should be noted that this was before Paterno was fired on Wednesday night. Spielman says he may have to check himself a little bit, but hopes to put things in perspective, particularly how the whole situation will affect the players on the field.

Chris Spielman joined 710 ESPN Seattle with Mike Salk and Brock Huard to discuss how he’s approaching the game as a broadcaster, how the players can possibly be preparing for the game, if the game should be played and the process Penn State must go through at this point.

How do you approach this game as a broadcaster, given that there’s both a game and a huge story involved?:

“I think there’s no doubt this is uncharted territory for anybody that’s ever called a game and I put a lot of faith in my faith that the words will come out right and I’ll do it justice in the way it should be done and in an appropriate, proper manner. I’ll probably have to check myself a little bit. I’m a passionate guy about football and I call a game passionately. … You have to maybe get in the perspective of how the situation — not necessarily the situation with Jerry Sandusky but the Joe Paterno situation — how that affects the team on the field, how that affects Nebraska coming in and kind of, maybe, what’s going through the players’ minds. I think that’s the approach I’m going to try to take.”

How are those guys possibly preparing for a football game this week?:

“How I look at it is you’re brothers. You don’t have to like each other off the field, but on the field, everybody loves each other. You’re playing for one common goal and one common purpose. The game of football deserves to be played with honor and you have a chance to do your thing. It’s an escape for them. … This is way above Joe Paterno, way above Penn State, this is about us coming together as one unit for one common goal. That’s the only thing we can control. … If I were a captain in that huddle, that’s exactly what I would say to my teammates.”

Do you think this game should be played?:

“Yeah. Why not? Why are we going to punish the seniors? Why are we going to punish Penn State players? Why are we going to punish Nebraska?”

On the process that Penn State must go through at this point:

“In my opinion, that process includes purging the whole system, starting anew and letting Penn State stand for what it says it stands for. … Now, I don’t like saying that. I love Joe Paterno. I think Joe Paterno is a great coach. He recruited me. … I just think it’s never about one person. … It’s about the university as a whole. It’s about maintaining the greatness of the university and standing for something.”

The Nebraska Cornhuskers lost a quarterback. The Kansas City Royals gained an outfielder. Bubba Starling, the Royals’ first-round pick in this year’s Major League Baseball draft, signed a deal at the deadline Monday night that will pay him $7.5 million over the span of three years.

It would have seemed weird if Starling hadn’t signed the deal, yet it was probably equally awkward spending time working out with the Cornhuskers in Lincoln while all of this was going down. In the end, he simply couldn’t pass up the opportunity.

Bubba Starling joined WHB in Kansas City with Between the Lines to discuss the process of deciding between baseball and football while at Cornhuskers’ camp the past few weeks, why he likes baseball more than any other sport, the awkwardness of going back to Lincoln to get his stuff, how Bo Pelini handled the situation, what signing at deadline was like, how he emerged as a top player and how fast he can make it to the show.

How did the whole process go with you being at Nebraska but knowing baseball was a strong possibility?:

“It was really weird just considering if I did choose baseball, I wasn’t getting to work out or do anything, baseball-wise. But I got to experience the football side of it up there and meet some of the great guys … and just experience what it would be like possibly playing college football.”

How much more important is baseball to you than other sports?:

“It was a big factor. Just growing up I had a lot of cousins around me that played baseball. … We always played some other sports to, but it was mainly in the area of that, just playing baseball with them and growing up with all them guys and teaching me everything. … I play a lot of football, but I didn’t have all those guys around me teaching me.”

Doesn’t it seem kind of crazy that last week you could have taken your football teammates to lunch and now when you go back to get your things you can’t because that would violate NCAA rules?:

“It’s kinda crazy because I was just up there with them and now I’m gone and now I’m not a teammate of them and I can’t buy them lunch and I could have when I was up there. I wish I could’ve had some more time up there with some of those guys.”

Did it feel like Bo Pelini was almost re-recruiting you to stay in Lincoln and choose football?:

“A little bit, but not too much. I was just like every other player. He knew coming into it that there was a baseball side of it and I could possibly go my baseball route and play for the Kansas City Royals. He was just real supportive with all of it and, at the end, he was real supportive when I called and I just told him good luck.”

Was making a deal with the Royals at the last minute before the deadline exciting or harrowing?:

“It was exciting but it was also nerve-wracking. I was just anxious. I was wanting to get the deal done so bad. … It was fun getting to do all the great things I did in high school and now transitioning from high school to professional baseball, I’m just excited.”

What happened with your game to make you go from perhaps a second-round pick to being the top position player picked in the draft?:

“A lot of people didn’t think I was playing that much competition here in Kansas and they kind of wanted to see what I could do against some other guys around the U.S. I think getting to play on Team USA and getting to travel around and play in some different showcase deals, that helped me out a lot. I got to show the scouts and some of the coaches out there what I could do.”

Do you have a personal timetable you’ve set on how long you want it to take to get to the big leagues?:

“I haven’t really thought about it too much. I just want to work as hard as I can the next few years. It’s going to take a little bit of time, of course. … Hopefully I can make it up here whenever, hopefully soon.”

With fall camps opening around the nation in college football this week, we can finally start thinking about where this season is headed. Being a bit of a Big Ten guy, I’ve certainly got my eye on how Nebraska will transition into the league after coming over from the Big 12.

It sounds like Cornhuskers coach Bo Pelini is most interested in that as well, talking about the versatility of his defense against mobile quarterbacks as well as adding some coaching help to boost his offensive line. What he doesn’t seem concerned with is the number of his players who are on Twitter, saying he allows them to police themselves, at least until or unless something goes wrong.

Bo Pelini joined 1620 The Zone in Omaha with Kevin and Mike’l to discuss whether he has the versatility he wants on defense, how he’s defenses seem to get better later in seasons, if he’s worried about Twitter, how duties will be split up with his brother Carl this year and adding the offensive line coaching help.

Do you have the versatility that you would like on defense?:

“Yeah, that’s kind of how why recruit. We try to recruit athletes and plug them in where we feel like maybe we need them. And we run a system that’s pretty flexible and they can adjust pretty easily.”

How have your defenses seemingly been able to get better and better later in seasons?:

“Going in, you kind of have what you think your team is going to be. But then you figure it out over time and you have to make adjustments according to what your strengths are, who’s playing good football. As a coach, you’ve got to play to the strengths of your personnel. You don’t want to take your personnel and just jam them into a system. … I think we’ve done that pretty well.”

Are you concerned about your players using Twitter and other social media?:

“All that social media between the Twitter and Facebook, I wouldn’t say it keeps me up at night, but our guys have been pretty responsible with it. They understand that it’s a privilege, not a right. They fully understand that if they do something it’ll be taken away in a heartbeat. They understand that, and I think they’ve managed themselves and they’ve done a good job of it.”

How will the defensive responsibilities be split this year between you and your brother Carl?:

“It’s kind of business as usual. He’s going to be walking around more. … But that allows Carl to do a lot of different things, have his hand in there. But like I said, not much has changed.”

On adding coaches to what many hope is an improved offensive line:

“We decided to go with the second offensive line coach because it’s important. I thought we needed to improve on the offensive line. It’s hard for one guy to do it. At the end of the day, you’re coaching almost half the guys on one side of the football. Adding another set of eyes helps. … Now [with a GA as well] you’ve got three guys really coaching those six spots. We wanted added emphasis up front, that’s why we chose to go that way. … You’ve got to have the right mix of people to be able to do something like that.”

Prince Amukamara may have had one of the most difficult names to pronounce in this year’s upcoming draft, but don’t let that discourage you when talking about a cover corner who is getting a lot hype surrounding his potential. Amukamara didn’t have an interception in 2010, but it seemed like he never had the ball thrown his way all that often.

The former Nebraska Cornhusker has been projected to go anywhere between picks number ten through twenty of the first round as it will depend on how high Patrick Peterson is taken and the ensuing teams in need of secondary help. The most up-to-date mock drafts have “The Prince,” destined for the Motor City in Detroit to play alongside former Cornhusker Ndamukong Suh. Amukamara is a playmaker that favors dominating receivers and playing press coverage according to his own admissions on KTAR.

Prince Amukamara joined KTAR in Phoenix with Doug and Wolf to discuss his feelings going into the draft, if he’s enjoying the pre-draft process, what he brings to the table, what kind of coverage he prefers to play in and if he was forced to guess right now who does he think he’ll be playing for.

How are you feeling right now going into the draft?

“Well I’m not really too worried about Thursday. I’m sure Wednesday night I probably won’t be able to sleep. I’ll be twisting and turning, but right now I’m just living it day-by-day and just enjoying this experience as much as I can.”

Are you really enjoying the pre-draft experience?

“Yes I’ve been noticing that too and I’ve been doing a lot of first time things. For example I rode a subway for my first time out here and went to my first baseball game, which happened to be the Yankees game, so a very cool experience.”

What do you bring to the table?

“I’m just a player who is going to compete every day, day in and day out. I’m a very physical corner. I love to tackle. I think I’m a one of the best cover corners in the draft and just tell me what to do and I’m going to get the job done. I definitely want to embrace the organization and the NFL.”

Do you like press coverage? Press man coverage? Do you like playing off your wide receiver a little bit?

“I mean when you play off you have a chance to look at the quarterback and make plays on the ball, but if I really just want to dominate a receiver I just get up and press him.”

If you were forced to guess right now who do you think is going to draft you?

“Carolina. [Hosts and Prince Amukamara begin to laugh] No. No. I’m kidding. I mean all the coaches are doing a good job of playing poker and not showing their cards, so it feels like everybody likes you and everybody wants to draft you. No one is really batting their eyelashes or eyes at me more than another.”

This past season, Prince Amukamara of Nebraska won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Award becoming the third Cornhusker to do so in school history. His physical style of play and his ability to lock down top wide receivers in the Big 12 makes him a good fit for the NFL, which is why he is rated as a top cornerback in the draft. Although he was only a two-year starter in college, his instincts are top-notch and he has a great ability to read receivers and jump routes. Amukamara reminds me somewhat of a poor man’s Darrelle Revis because quarterbacks don’t throw to his side of the field and he is at his best in man coverage playing bump-and-run. Although he may not have the speed of Revis, he shows a good press at the line and is quick enough to recover if his bump fails. In my opinion, he is plenty talented to play in the NFL and has the tools to become a great player. For those reasons and more, it looks as though Amukamara will be off the board pretty early in the first round come April.

Prince Amukamara joined 1620 the Zone in Omaha to talk about what Nebraska’s secondary coach Marvin Sanders did to help him become a first round draft pick, what were some of the special memories he had at Nebraska, and who are some of the other players working out with him in Arizona.

What Nebraska’s secondary coach Marvin Sanders did to help him become a first round draft pick:

“Coach Sanders was a different coach. I never had a coach like him, I never had a coach on me like he was and I just call it tough love. Anytime I slip up, and even if it was just a little thing, and I would complain about it, he would just explain to me how little things matter and he was just always on me. The expectations kept rising and I would just keep trying to meet them.”

Whether it was tough at first to accept the criticism:

“Yes, yes, for sure. At first I was asking myself if he didn’t like me or if he hated me, and I just learned that is his coaching style and I appreciate it a lot. I think that is the coaching style I am used to.”

What were some of the special memories he had at Nebraska:

“Probably just the fans and just the love that they expressed out to us. My closest friends at Nebraska were Roy Helu, Marcus Mendoza and Eric Hagg. We did everything together, the hospital visits, but the one thing that comes to mind would probably be just the tunnel walk… I can’t even explain that experience.”

What the difference was when Coach Pelini came in and replaced Coach Callahan:

“When Coach Pelini came he definitely established a whole new culture that kept all of us accountable and just get us ready to be young men in the future.”

Who are some of the other players working out with him in Arizona:

“We have a lot of guys, Roy Helu, he is out here, Blaine Gabbert from Missouri, AJ Green from Georgia, Julio Jones from Alabama, Aaron Williams from Texas. There is a lot of good athletes there and we are all just competing and chasing our dreams here.”

Four games, three sacks for rookie defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh. Many thought Suh would be an impact player in the NFL, even as a rookie. But I don’t think too many thought he would be so disruptive so quickly. For Suh, he’d just as well not have any statistics if it meant his team would be doing better in the win column than they are. But the wins look like they might be coming more regularly for Suh and the Lions if they continue to improve like they have compared to a year ago.

Suh joined WDFN in Detroit to talk about how he’d assess his first four NFL games, just how disheartening the loss to Green Bay was, particularly for him and his defensive teammates who surrendered a late lead, learning how to cope with losses in the NFL, getting back on track this coming weekend against St. Louis, and his work with the NFL teaching kids how to take captivating sports photography.

On if he feels like he’s made a sufficient contribution and impact on the Lions defense through four games:

“I can’t say that just yet. I think it’s an average start but I’m definitely excited and looking forward to doing more. I’ve made some good plays out there, and I’ve left some plays out there. So I think there’s a lot of work left. I really don’t care for stats. Let’s say for instance, yeah, I’ve gotten a sack in three of the last four games, but I really care about the wins.”

On the atmosphere in the locker room after the Lions’ tough loss to the Green Bay Packers:

“I think we definitely share that same mindset that we’re getting close, but it really just comes down to finishing the games and taking out big plays throughout the game that can really potentially either one way or another give us a win or having to make us lose. So we just have to eliminate those big plays and allow us to be in those games, and really when we’re up and have a chance, put away teams.”

On the disappointing late loss to the Packers:

“It was definitely disappointing. I think we played well for the majority of that game, obviously we’d given up some plays here and there, but overall I think we did pretty well until that last drive. To allow a team to take out six minutes and thirty-two seconds or so is not playing good defense, and allowing them to run it all the way up the field. Coach had a confidence in us, and I hope he still keeps it because I think if we were put back in that same particular position, I think it would come out in a different way.“

On learning how to deal with losing in the NFL:

“It’s something that I don’t take very well, with losing, but playing college football and going through a rough season, being 5-7 at Nebraska, you definitely learn to bounce back from those things — getting ready, you refocus yourself. Obviously you deal with it the day you lose the game, obviously you deal with it then, then the day after maybe a little bit more. But other then that, you’ve got to take the mistakes, learn from them, take the good things and the bad and move forward and move on to the next game.”

On going up against Sam Bradford, a fellow rookie who also came out of the Big 12 like Suh:

For me it’s as simple as going against Brett Favre or Michael Vick. Obviously he just isn’t that big of a name as Brett Favre or Michael Vick and he’s trying to create his own name as I’m trying to create my own name in this league. So it’s a great opportunity for me to get after another quarterback, and I’m really just excited to be back at home, have my family and friends in town, and play against in St. Louis to get a chance to win a game.”

If this week’s rumors are correct, the New Mexico football program may be looking at going from one controversial coach to another.

Mike Locksley, currently the head coach in Albuquerque, has won just one time in his first 15 games and lost 72-0 to Oregon to open this season. He also only coached 14 of those games because he was suspended for one last year after punching one of his assistant coaches. The lack of on-field success and presence of off-field blunders may have Locksley facing an early exit.

Rumors this week out of New Mexico seem to suggest just that, that the Lobos are looking at replacing Locksley with Mike Leach. You’ll remember Leach was shown the door at Texas Tech last year after a player came out and said his treatment for a concussion included being made to stand in a dark place for hours at a time.

Leach pretty much played dumb on such rumors during an interview in Dallas.

Mike Leach joined KRLD in Dallas with Rage to discuss Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville’s decision to punt late in a loss to Texas, Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez’s hot start, the rumors that he’s going to be the next coach at New Mexico, whether he’d be interested in the Lobos job and, of all things, what kind of cut he asks for when he gets his hair cut.

On Texas Tech punting the ball when it should have gone for a first down late in a loss to Texas:

“The loss is going to count the same whether you lose by 10 or you lose by 17 and you’ve got to give yourself a chance to win. I remember we upset the Aggies one time and we beat Kansas one time in a similar situation. The Kansas play ended up being on third down and we ran it because we knew we’d do either/or on fourth down. [On Saturday] if they convert it and they march down and score, they have a chance to win the thing. If you punt it, there’s really no chance to win unless he fumbles the punt. You have to go out there and try to win those things and play until the clock says zero. The difference between losing by 10 or 17, there really isn’t one.”

On Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez:

“Well, I think it’s too early to say. I think everybody’s optimistic about him and I think that it’s a problem that Nebraska certainly wishes would’ve gotten sorted out during camp. … Nevertheless, he did some really good things against Washington. Nebraska just flat out demoralized Washington. I think I’d say it’s a really good start for him. … I thought it was a great win for Nebraska and, for them, hopefully it’s kind of a statement of things to come.”

On rumors that he’ll be taking over at New Mexico:

“Well, I plan to get back into coaching. All I’ve heard on that is just on a rumor level. Mike Locksley’s a good person, a good coach. He’s had some adversity and hopefully he gets through it. At some point I plan to get in at the right situation, right time and all that. As far as New Mexico, I haven’t heard anything on it beyond just some blogs that have been forwarded to me. I don’t know any more about that than you do and I suspect you know more than I do.”

On whether New Mexico would be a desirable place to go next or he’s looking for a more high-profile job:

“I don’t know about that. A high-tempo program, great fans, great place and all those other things. … I’m happy with what I’m doing now, so I’ll keep doing that and at the end of the season we’ll see what happens. I think New Mexico is a great program. It’s always had really good potential and it’s a great state. But like I said, they’ve got Mike Locksley and I think he can do good things here and we’ll just let it ride at that.”

On what he asks for when he goes in for a haircut:

“I try to just keep it the same and cut a little more off. I’m just trying to be comfortable but between the lines and get you one of those haircuts that you don’t have to think about very much. Not too short, not too long, just kind of shape it up a little bit because my hair tends to go straight up.”

Last year Nebraska surprised a lot of people by making it all the way to the Big 12 Championship behind the best defense in the country. When they got to the Championship game against Texas, there were not too many people outside of Lincoln that gave them a chance to beat the Longhorns. However, the Cornhuskers nearly upset the ‘Horns and now they head into their last season in the Big 12 looking to capture the conference championship on their way out the door and into the Big Ten.

The Cornhuskers are a top ten team in the country, but they still have many questions they need to answer before conference play opens up. Not only is Ndamukong Suh missing off the defensive line, but they also have a huge question at quarterback. If the Cornhuskers want to leave for the Big Ten with a conference championship, they will need to rely on the “Blackshirts” much like they did a year ago.

Bo Pelini joined ESPN Radio with Scott Van Pelt and Ryen Russillo to talk about how he feels about the new social network and the media’s coverage of the team, what he thinks of the quarterback situation this year, when he felt like Nebraska football was back, how tough it will be to replace Ndamukong Suh, and how important it is for his team’s to have a good defense.

On how he feels about the quarterback position:

“Yeah. We feel really good about our quarterback situation. It’s a situation where I feel like we’ve got three guys we can win with. I don’t know if there’s a lot of people out there that can say that. It’s been great competition. I think the competition has made each guy better and it’s made our football team better because I think we’re gonna be deeper at that position than we’ve been and I think it’s a really good situation for us to be in.”

On how he feels about the program moving forward and how close he feels the program is to being where it once was:

“I thought we were getting that way, but what I liked at the end of last year was the fact that we started to be more consistent. When I say that, we can compete, the first thing you have to do in your program to be able to compete is make sure that the kids in your program are doing the right things off the field, they’re managing their day to day activities, they understand what it means to come in and put a hard days work in on and off the field because then you can really get to the business of football and preparing them to play on Saturday’s. That’s a big part of our culture is competing and doing the things on the day to day basis that you have to do. I thought as the season went on last year that the light came on and I thought it started to show on the field. Does that mean that we’re gonna beat everybody on our schedule? That remains to be seen, but I do think we have that opportunity. And we’re heading in the right direction. Now we just have to keep it going that way.”

On the loss of Suh:

“We lost a number of good football players. We lost a few guys, but I just feel like we’re deeper now. We have more depth, we have more options, I think we’re set up a little bit better to handle if somebody does go down. The tools are there. We’re really deep in the defensive backfield and talented there. We have a good combination of experience and youth. On the surface I think we have that opportunity, now what we do with that opportunity we’ll see. I think we’re getting better in some areas but we still have a long way to go and a lot of areas to improve in.”

On the importance of defense at Nebraska:

“Obviously I’m a defensive guy and I grew up coaching defense, I always feel like that is going to be our identity. You have to be good on defense if you want to win championships. I don’t think there’s any way around that. There’s no sense anymore of just outscore everybody because eventually you’re going to run up against somebody that’s gonna stop you and you gotta play some good defense. I feel good that we’re gonna be able to get that done here and I feel like we’re headed in that direction. I feel really good about where we are offensively on this football team this year and I think we’re gonna surprise some people, do some things and put some numbers up on offense as well.”

The Detroit Lions have been able to draft a lot of talent over the last five years but most of them have not panned out for one reason or another or have moved onto another team. One of the main goals that the Lions set out to accomplish this offseason was to improve the defense, placing an emphasis on the defensive line through free agency and the draft. This year, with their top draft choice they chose to draft Nebraska defensive lineman, Ndamukong Suh, with the second overall pick, which in my opinion, Suh was the best player in the draft. The Lions also went out and signed veteran Kyle Vanden Bosch, who before last season spent the previous five years in Tennessee playing under Jim Schwartz. Suh and Vanden Bosch will join fellow veterans Jared DeVries and Corey Williams to help anchor and solidify their defensive line. So far during the Lions OTA’s and mini-camps, Suh has been running with the first-team defense. Coach Schwartz would like for him to bulk up to around 325 lbs before the start of the season. The extra weight will help his solid rush defense get that much better. Suh is expected to start the season and I expect him to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year award.

Ndamukong Suh on KFXX in Portland to talk about whether it bothered him that Nebraska moved to the Big Ten Conference, what he thinks is the best thing about Detroit, and him planning on giving some of his contract money back to Nebraska.

Whether it bothered him that Nebraska moved to the Big Ten Conference:

“I definitely have pride in the Big 12… Going back and forth between who is better, the Big 10 or the Big 12? And who is better, Nebraska or Iowa? But honestly your school is what you stay close to the most.”

What he thinks is the best thing about Detroit:

“The best thing about Detroit is the people, the fans out here. I mean it is amazing. Everybody first told me when I was getting ready to come out here that everybody has been down in a slum and the fans aren’t going to be that happy to embrace you and then it has been a total opposite. They have embraced me with open arms and I have enjoyed it ever since I have been out here. Actually, I was out here for the first time this weekend. I definitely enjoyed it a lot. I went to the Tigers game, went to NASCAR on Sunday and the fans there are just amazing.”

Whether he has gotten paid yet:

“I have not. I am still, I still have not received my contract and I don’t know when that will happen but hopefully it will come soon.”

On him planning on giving some of his contract money back to Nebraska:

“Yes, sir I do. I had a great, great four or five years there or four and a half years to be exact. Their Engineering program, Engineering school and obviously played some great football while I was there. I definitely want to give back to a program that gave me so much and a school that gave me so much.”

Who the quarterback is that he would most like to sack:

“The quarterback that I would most like to sack, not to hurt him by any means but it would mean quite a bit to sack a future Hall of Famer in Brett Favre… Yeah I would definitely like to sack Favre. That would be a nice notch on my belt, the quarterbacks that I have sacked.”

Whether he is starting right now in practice:

“There is no particular status as to whether they are going to be a starter or not. But I am running with the ones or the first group today. I am definitely embracing that and being able to play with some great guys in Kyle Vanden Bosch, Corey Williams and Jared DeVries and so forth.”
