We are a little more than a week away from one of the most anticipated events in golf history, Tiger Woods’ return to golf at Augusta National for the 2010 Masters. Just in case you live a sheltered life, this will be Tiger Woods first time competing on a golf course since winning the JBWere Masters Tournament in Australia back in the middle of last November. This was a no-brainer for Tiger to choose his return to golf at the Masters Tournament because Augusta National controls everything. In fact, the PGA Tour isn’t even involved. Augusta National is in charge of everything and you can bet that they will make Tiger feel as comfortable as possible. Tiger doesn’t play in golf tournaments unless he feels that he can win it. As we all know, Tiger is so good because of his mental toughness on the golf course. Tiger is going to need it all to get through the 2010 Masters Tournament.

Former Masters Champion Zach Johnson joined KNBR in San Francisco to talk about whether he is planning to play in Houston this week or just waiting for the Masters, what ‘prep week’ involves and whether he gets to play Augusta National or just his home course, and whether he thinks that Tiger will be more forceful or less forceful than before.

Whether he is planning to play in Houston this week or just waiting for the Masters:

“This is my prep week for Augusta. I am at home on St. Simon’s Island trying to get ready for the Masters here and we just had this big announcement today about the McGladrey Classic that is going to take place here in October. I am at home which is kind of nice.”

What ‘prep week’ involves and whether he gets to play Augusta National or just his home course:

“Actually, yes a combination of the two. I am going to head up to Augusta this week, midweek sometime, weather pending of course and try to get at least eighteen holes in and see how that holds. I am going to get some prep up there and I am going to come back home. I am three hours from Augusta now living in southeast Georgia so I can jaunt up there and get back and still have dinner with the family. When I come home I practice here on St. Simon’s. The gold amenities that we have here on this island, the resources we have are second to none as far as I am concerned. I have got fast greens, I have got perfect conditions to try to prepare for Augusta. There is nothing that is like Augusta National outside of the hallowed grounds of Augusta National, but I can kind of pinpoint exactly what areas of the game that I need to work on and certainly areas that I need to focus on so that when Thursday of next week comes around I am ready to go.”

Whether he thinks that Tiger will be more forceful or less forceful than before:

“You know that is hard to say… I think inside the ropes he is still Tiger Woods. He is still the best player to play the game. Frankly his resume, there is nothing really parallel to it outside of Jack Nicklaus as far as I am concerned. He still has that whole aura about him as far as inside the ropes. I think he is going to be a force regardless of what sort of shape his game is regardless of how much time he has taken off. He is Tiger Woods and he is human. I thought that he is super natural but evidently he is human. He is going to be a force to be reckoned with there is no question about that.”
