Danny Woodhead: The Chargers Coaching Staff Sold Me on Going to San Diego

Another fan favorite is moving on from New England. Danny Woodhead agreed to terms on a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers last week. The third-down back will back up Ryan Mathews in San Diego and provide a dynamic option for Philip Rivers. Woodhead is excited to be a part of the Mike McCoy era in San Diego. Danny Woodhead joined The Mighty 1090 in San Diego with Darren Smith to discuss signing with the San Diego Chargers, the biggest lure of coming to San Deigo, moving on from the New England Patriots, his role in the Chargers offense and being compared to Darren Sproles.

How does it feel to be a San Diego Charger?

“I’m very excited. I’m excited about what we have going on and where the organization is going. It’s a real exciting time for me and my family to come out there.”

What was the biggest lure of coming to San Diego?

“The coaching staff and just talking to them. They made me excited to be a part of what’s going on. I’m excited to play with a bunch of great players.”

Did you feel like New England was an option for you or when was the door closed with the Patriots?

“The last three years I have enjoyed there and it was a great time in my career, so I am very thankful for it, but I just felt like this was a better option for me and my family at this time. We’re real excited about it.”

What’s your role in the Chargers new offense?

“I think all of that stuff is determined at a later date as far as role. I am just going to come in and try to do whatever I can and to help the team out. Just play football to the best of my abilities and that’s all I can focus on.”

Do you like that people are comparing you to Darren Sproles? Is that fair?

“You know, Darren Sproles is obviously a great football player for the past few years and any time that you can be mentioned like that is obviously flattering, but I try to just go out and work hard and be who I am and try to help the team out, whichever way I can.”
