Arizona Cardinals defensive lineman Darnell Dockett is a rare bird. He’s owned an alligator, he once took a shower on the Internet and — most recently — he “jokingly” asked out AJ McCarron’s famously beautiful girlfriend on Twitter. But Dockett insists that Katherine Webb isn’t actually his type. Darnell Dockett joined Bickley & MJ on XTRA Sports 910 in Phoenix to discuss new head coach Bruce Arians, a position change, and his infamous Twitter exchange with AJ McCarron and Katherine Webb.
On new head coach Bruce Arians:
“I did my research on Bruce, man, and he’s a great guy. I talked to a lot of players that played with him — Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney, even some guys in Pittsburgh — everybody vouched for him. They all said he’s a good guy. And a couple days ago I got a text message from somebody and I was like, ‘Who is this?’ and they was like, ‘Hey, hit me up. It’s B.A. Give me a call. I want to talk to you ASAP.’ And I’m looking at the text message like, ‘I don’t even know who this is; I’m not calling them back.’ So the next day I get a text message and it’s like, ‘This is your coach. Give me a call. I want to check in with you.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh, shoot. New coach.’ I’m used to getting those messages from Whiz.”
On being told by Arians that he’s going to be a three-technique defensive tackle again:
“He told me he’s gonna put me in my regular position that I had been playing over the years, and I was a dominant force in the middle. That got me fired up right away because I’ve been just looking for another opportunity to do what I do best and go out and dominate games.”
On being excited about having that opportunity again:
“I’m very excited, man. Because when you’re playing against teams throughout the last couple years and you know you’re so much better than the individuals you’re playing against, but you’re neutralized, you can’t really do as much as you would normally do because it’s all in the scheme and the defense is doing different things. So people kind of forget about you. … I never wanted to be an Albert Haynesworth. I never wanted to be one of those guys who will get paid a lot of money and get into the media and bitch and complain about the position and things like that. I just sucked it up. … I just did my best at a position that I was never really great at. But again, I just never wanted to be one of those guys and I just wanted to put the team first and I wasn’t gonna let my selfish ways get involved with our team. I sacrificed.”
On jokingly asking AJ McCarron’s girlfriend, Katherine Webb, out on Twitter during the BCS Championship Game:
“It’s not that serious. I was just laughing at people responding because people were really thinking that I was gonna put my number on Twitter. Anybody that knows Darnell Dockett — the real me, not just the football player, not just the guy you see on TV — anyone that knows me personally knows there is never a dull moment in my life. I’m always excited. I’m always thinking of the next gimmick, the next trick. It was an opportunity. She’s a very beautiful girl, but I just feel like somebody who’s been modeling and going to Alabama and doing all that country stuff, I just want to take her out of her [element] and bring her to get some of these garlic wings and these barbecue wings, and see a few strippers and things like that, so she can appreciate what she’s doing. I’m just giving back to the community in the long run.”
On Webb not being his type:
“If I really wanted to get his girl there’s a bunch of different ways I’d have went about it. And I would have got her if I really wanted her. But I don’t think she’s my type. I’m not into the thinner girls and the modelling thing like that. I like hood chicks. I like girls with a couple stab wounds, bullet holes, been knocked up a few times. I like girls who you know have bad credit when they’re 21.”
