The New England Patriots have fallen to 3-3, which puts them in a four-way tie for first, and last, in the AFC East. It’s early, so while Tom Brady’s disappointed, he’s not panicking.
Yet the latest New England loss came with some added drama, with Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman taking fire at Brady. Sherman claimed, via a tweet that’s now been deleted, that Brady “told me and Earl [Thomas] to see him after the game when they win.” The photo below shows Sherman seeing Brady, but after a Seattle victory instead. He sent that to Twitter along with the caption, ‘U mad bro?,’ which of course went viral.
Sherman was also quoted saying the Patriots “aren’t built for a heavyweight fight.”
Tom Brady joined Jim Gray on Dial Global Sports to discuss Sunday’s tough loss to Seattle, the onus on him in the aftermath of that game and the incident involving him and Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman.
On Sunday’s tough loss to Seattle:
“Well it was a long night for all of us players and coaches that were involved. To be up 13 points there in the fourth quarter and to let one slip away is very frustrating, but we’ve got to learn from our mistakes and learn from the mistakes that we made there in the fourth quarter and try to improve upon them. Three-and-three is very mediocre in this league and that’s where we’re at, and we’re really the only people that can do anything about it. That means we all have to go out and execute at a higher level when it matters the most.”
On feeling especially responsible considering that his intentional grounding penalty late in the first half probably cost the Patriots three points:
“I have very high expectations, and when I make plays that put us in a position to lose a game, that certainly makes for a long night and a long week for me. The only thing you can do is work harder to really make sure those things don’t happen again, and that’s the effort I’m going to put in this week.”
On Richard Sherman:
“He’s a very good player and I have a lot of respect for that defense and certainly that secondary. They play very well together. My dad taught me at a young age to play with class and respect and give my opponents respect, and certainly I have a lot of respect for the Seahawks.”
On if he feels Sherman is giving him the respect he deserves:
“My dad also told me to worry about the things that I can control and certainly not worry about the things that I can’t. And I really don’t have feelings either way toward what someone may say or think. Really, what’s important is how I feel. We went out and we played a very good team on the road and had an opportunity to win there in the fourth quarter and just didn’t take advantage of it.”
On if the Patriots are built for a “heavyweight fight,” in light of Sherman suggesting that they are not:
“We’re 3-3 so we’ve got 10 games to determine the fate of our season, and really it’s a matter of us getting better. I don’t think anything’s decided here in the sixth week of the year, or how capable you are of winning big games. That’s to be determined in January and it’s only October, so we’re just going to keep trying to get better. … Obviously 3-3 is not where we wanted to be, but that’s where we’re at. And if we’re going to move forward and improve then we’ve got to be determined to do that. And that’s a commitment that each of us players have to make.”
On if the sky’s falling in New England today:
“It always is in Boston when we lose. We’ve been in this situation before, and it’s not obviously a great situation to be in at 3-3. But we get great support and I think our fans expect a lot out of us and we expect a lot out of ourselves as well. We’re going to do everything we can to go out there and fight back and see if we can make something of this season.”
