The 2010 NFL Draft is quickly approaching and nobody knows for certain whom the St. Louis Rams are going to select with the number one overall pick. All signs point towards Sam Bradford going to play for Steve Spagnuolo in St. Louis, but with no pre-draft contract in place, there has been some speculation of the Rams being very interested in trading down from the first pick and that they have been listening to offers from other interested teams. This could be a major factor as to why they are saying they are in no hurry to sign anyone prior to the draft. They want the ability to trade the pick up until the last minute and signing a player before the draft would prevent them from doing so. I think that is good business by the Rams because as a franchise you would like to keep your options open and see if another team could come up with a package deal. Unless someone shows up banging on the Rams door with an offer too good to be true, this is a done deal. Sam Bradford will be the first name called by Roger Goodell on Thursday night in New York City.
Sam Bradford joined the Dan Patrick Show to talk about why he doesn’t have a contract with the Rams already, whether he wants to play for the Rams, what he can learn from the Ben Roethlisberger situation, and whether teams have asked him about his past.
Whether he thinks that he is going to be drafted on Thursday:
“Well it is not for sure but I hope so.”
Why he doesn’t have a contract with the Rams already:
“No, I do not because no one from the Rams has called me and said that ‘Hey, we are going to take you.’”
Whether the Rams have talked to his agent:
“As far as I know they have not.”
Whether he is concerned that he doesn’t know where he is going to be playing football next year:
“You know what? It doesn’t really concern me. When I started this process I knew that I wasn’t going to know where I was going to be playing until Draft day. At this point it still looks like Thursday is when I am going to find out and I think that it adds some kind of excitement into this whole process.”
Whether he wants to play for the Rams:
“You know I am just looking forward to the opportunity of playing in the NFL. Whether it is with the Rams or whoever decides to take me I think that it is going to be a great opportunity and that I am looking forward to it.”
Whether he has been told that the Rams are going to select him but they will not sign you until Draft night:
“I mean I have heard that same thing. That is why it kind of surprises me because people out there right now think that I have said ‘No’ or my agent has said ‘No.’ That is not the case at all. They haven’t…”
Whether he has told the Rams that he doesn’t want to play for them:
“No, absolutely not. No, I have never said that. I think that got out there a couple of weeks ago. To be honest I don’t know where all of these things are coming from. I think that it is interesting but no one has ever called me or my agent and said, ‘Hey, we are going to take you. Let’s talk contract.’”
Who he grew up as a fan of:
“I was actually a Pittsburgh Steelers fan growing up. Kordell Stewart was my favorite player back in the day.”
What he can learn from the Ben Roethlisberger situation and whether teams have asked him about his past:
“To be honest, obviously I wasn’t there so I don’t know exactly what happened at that situation, but my agent he has talked to me, my parents, obviously you have to be careful with this day and age with cell phones, cell phones with cameras, video cameras… There is a possibility that someone is taping you at all times. I think if you just surround yourself with good people and keep yourself in good situations, you can try to limit the possible bad things that can happen to you I guess.”
