By Brandon Phillips Believes Carlos Gonzalez Should Be MVP Front-Runner

Brandon Phillips has a teammate that is currently locked in the MVP race. He doesn’t believe, at least as of today, that that teammate should win the award.
Joey Votto, who won over the hearts of many through his campaign to be the last man added to the All-Star team, enters today hitting .323 with 32 home runs and 100 RBI. That sounds like enough to get the man an MVP award, or at least it should in the eyes of his teammates, right?
I guess not. Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips says the award should go to Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez if the season was over today. Gonzalez enters today with the exact same home run and RBI numbers, but with an average 14 points higher. That’s enough to earn Phillips’ vote.
Brandon Phillips joined 104.3 the Fan in Denver on the Drive to discuss his MVP choice, what it’s like to face a hot team like the Colorado Rockies during a pennant race, the Reds’ rivalry with St. Louis, the addition of Aroldis Chapman, the difference between a 98 mile per hour fastball and one clocked at 102, fantasy football (or lack thereof) and what his dating reality show might be like if he had one.
On facing the Rockies:
“We already know how the Rockies are in September and how they are at home. They’re a team that you’ve got to score at least 10 runs to beat these guys. They’re a really good team and they have a lot of young players on their team. It’s kind of hard when you have an MVP like CarGo over here just whooping up on it every day.”
On who the MVP is right now:
“You want to know the truth, man? I’m a very honest, blunt person and honestly I believe CarGo is the man. He’s hitting .340 and … he chasing the triple crown. If he leads in most of the categories of the triple crown, you’ve gotta lean that way. But it’s not over ’til it’s over.”
On the addition of Aroldis Chapman:
“It’s bananas, man. You never know what this guy’s going to bring and what he’s going to do. When you have a guy throwing 105, I think he’s the most exciting player in baseball right now. You can’t really beat that. Every time he throws the ball, I’m looking at the miles per hour. I want to know how hard this guy’s throwing. … I’m glad he’s on my team because I don’t want to face this cat.”
On the difference between a 98-mile-per-hour fastball and one at 102:
“To tell you the truth, I’ve never seen 102 so I can’t really answer that question. I’ve never faced it, but just looking at it, it looks like a little golf ball. When you’re facing guys that throw 98, if it’s not moving, it’s easy to hit. He could throw it 100 up there but if it’s straight as ever, it’s a hit.”
On who is on his fantasy football team and what his favorite NFL team is:
“I don’t play that. I don’t play that, man. I’m playing the Bengals right now. Bangles, Bengals, whatever you call it. Ochocinco, you know what I’m saying. That’s how I do it. You have to represent for Cincinnati. That’s my boys over there. Pacman Jones, even though he don’t like Pacman. You’ve got to go with the Bengals.”
On what a reality show involving him and a dating scene might be like if it existed:
“You’d learn a lot about me when it comes to that. My show would be tight. First of all, you gotta have a show, my number one rule would be that the women would have to wear no makeup. You’ve got to see the inner beauty. All the girls be having spray paint on their face, the airbrush caked up like they’ve been sleeping with makeup on. You wanna hug them and they get on your shirt and you get mad. … I don’t like makeup.”
