The Caddy is Out of the Garage And Is Looking to Be One of the Top Running Backs in the League
It’s been a really, really tough career so far for Cadillac Williams. After being the fifth pick out of Auburn in 2005, Caddy exploded onto the scene in Tampa Bay. After rushing for over 1,100 yards in his rookie campaign, he was named the Offensive Rookie of the Year. Since that time though, his career has been derailed by a multitude of injuries to his knees and has never been able to regain his form that he showed in his rookie campaign.
Last season was an up and down year for Williams, but he was able to stay healthy, he was able to have some games where he carried the ball more than 20 times, he finished second in voting for Comeback Player of the Year to Tom Brady, and he showed flashes of the ability that made him so good in his rookie season. Now, heading into his 6th season after not having to rehab any injuries this summer, Caddy is out of the garage and looking to prove that he can still be the player that he was coming out of Auburn in 2005. Cadillac Williams joined WDAE in Tampa with Ron and Ian to talk about how he is feeling in training camp so far, whether or not he still feels like he can be a featured back, and what his goals are for the season.
On how big it has been for him this offseason to not have to deal with injuries
“Oh wow. That’s big. Coming from two knee injuries and rehabbing to get ready for the season not kinda knowing how my knee is going to react and not really working on my skills, but just really working to get back on the field and then this offseason a little more me. Working on my skills and at the same time continuing to strengthen my knees, but more or less focusing on my skill set. It’s a totally, totally different mindset.”
On how much he is enjoying his sixth training camp:
“You know what? I’m enjoying training camp much more. When you go through what I went through with the knee injuries and things like that, you just come out here and your perspective on things is different. My whole mindset is different. I enjoy more now when I get to come out here and be with these guys because I know how it is to sit back and watch guys out there and wishing you could do it. I kinda sit back and enjoy things.”
On whether or not he feels like he can be the featured back in Tampa Bay:
“First of all, I think the opportunity is going be there for me to do it this year at an elite class. I think as a whole and as team we’re going to play much better. Coach Olsen came in with his scheme, we’ve been in it, we’re clicking like an offense, and I think we’re going to be much more competitive, we’re all gonna get more carries and things. I feel the more carries I have, the more I’m going to produce.”
On whether or not he sets goals for himself every season:
“No doubt. I do man. I’ll see how it goes. I definitely want to be one of the top backs in the league. I definitely want to rush well over 12 and like 1400 yards or anywhere around there. I’m really, this sixth year I’ve put the injuries behind me and I’m done with that. I’m back to playing football.”
On how his knees feel:
“Like new. Lovely. This is my sixth training camp and I think this is the best I’ve ever felt.”
