Robert Griffin III Continues to Impress as Redskins Training Camp Inches Closer

The wild ride continues for last year’s Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III. After his remarkable junior season, the media exposure really got intense for RG3 as he prepared for the NFL Draft. He’s handled it all perfectly, and now it’s almost time to see what he can do on the football field. RG3 joined ESPN Radio to talk about how his preparations for the Redskins’ upcoming  training camp, what his individual and team goals are for his rookie season, how he manages all the pressure he’s been facing for some time now, what it’s like being the star of the city so quickly, and why one of the host’s sons is wise for planning on drafting RG3 in his fantasy draft.

Robert, how are the preparations coming along as we get closer to training camps officially opening for the Redskins?
“It’s going good, I’ve talked to my teammates and they’re really excited about getting back and getting to work so we can work towards our goal. Those goals are unwritten right now but we’re all in it for the same thing, greatness.”

Obviously a team goal is making the Redskins team better, what is your goal?

“For me it’s just making sure my teammates have my back and are on my side. You always want to go into the season knowing that the people have your back no matter what happens and I think we’re working towards that. I think they truly do believe in me and I believe in them. At the end of the day, that’s all that matters because then we can go out and do what we need to do to win games.”

How do you manage the expectations that are around you and the pressure as a rookie quarterback?

“It’s not my job to look at it as pressure. People are excited about what’s going on in D.C. right now, who am I to tell them not to be excited? It’s definitely not going to be a lack of excitement for the team. It’s up to us, as a team, to go out there as a team and provide something for people to cheer for.”

What is it like for you now, being one of the most popular professional athletes in D.C.? What have you taken from this so far?

“Just the the city and the surrounding area is hungry for success and it’s something that I’m use to. Going to Baylor University and being in Waco and helping that community, not only myself but a lot of the guys I played with, just shows you what happens when a community can be hungry for success and you’re willing to go out there and give them that success. The possibilities are endless.”

My son has you as his starting quarterback in his fantasy league. Can you tell us why he made the right choice?

“I can sit up here and say what everybody else says, you know, hard work and dedication can get you to wherever you want to go. I believe in that and I believe in myself, the coaches believe in me and my team believes in me. That will help me go out and be successful and do whatever I need to do to help us win, whether it’s run for a lot of yards or throw for a lot of yards. Whether its a Redskins fan or a guy who has me on their fantasy team, they can definitely look forward to positive things.”
