In a Week 16 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Arian Foster was held out of the game because of an irregular heartbeat. It was rumored that the Texans running back was considering heart surgery on Friday, but Foster has denied that surgery was planned at all. Foster rushed for 1,424 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, but his team unfortunately fell in the divisional round of the playoffs to the New England Patriots. Foster spoke on radio row for the first time since the loss to the Pats. Arian Foster joined ESPN Radio with Colin Cowherd to discuss Chris Culliver getting a pass on his homophobic comments, his falsely reported heart surgery, his philosophy on performance-enhancing supplements, players taking supplements to cheat in the NFL and seeing players use steroids in college.
Should we give Chris Culliver of the 49ers a pass on his homophobic comments?
“I think this country was founded on the principle that you are free to think and free to feel however you want to feel. As long as you don’t act on those feelings, I feel like you are allowed to feel and express freely however you want to. I think he should get a pass.
Do I think he is correct in his judgement?
Nah. I don’t have those same feelings towards homosexuals, but that’s me. You can’t judge another man’s thoughts. As long as he doesn’t act on those feelings and being an activist against gay rights, I feel he is entitled to his own opinion.”What’s going on with this reported heart procedure for you?“It was a casual conversation with a media figure that I thought I knew, but it was just a casual conversation. I haven’t seen this person in a while.
We were just talking and she said one of her producers had a similar problem and had a surgery and was asking if there was something I was looking forward to or looking into doing?
I said, ‘Probably somewhere down the line because it’s a nuisance, but it’s not life-threatening.’ It happens, and I said this loosely — it’s a fairly normal heart condition to have. Any heart condition is worrisome, but yeah she said her producer had a surgery and asked if I wanted to do it somewhere down the line and I said maybe.
All of sudden I am having heart surgery next week and my mom is calling me saying, ‘You’re having heart surgery?
I’m like, ‘I don’t think so. Am I?’”Deer-antler spray? How far will players go?“I’ve always been a firm believer, and this is just me speaking, that I have always been a firm believer of anything that I need can come from the ground. It can come from earth. Anything else I never felt the need. In college, a lot of people took creatine. That was a big thing in college. I never took creatine. I never took muscle shakes or none of that. I’ve always been a firm believer of hard work and doing things the way I have always done it.”Do you think players in the league cheat?“Yeah. Yeah. To me, OK, if you are taking steroids and things like that, to me it’s a quick fix to a long-term solution, so it’s going to lead to more problems. Steroids make you stiff. Steroids do things to your body that are conducive to your health. So if you want to be strong for the season, yeah maybe it works and maybe it doesn’t. For the long haul I think it’ll hurt your body more than anything. That’s my opinion.”You played in the SEC in college. Could you tell guys were taking steroids?“I’ve seen and been around guys who juice. I’ve seen all kinds of things. If you can’t get motivated, you can’t get motivated.”
