Cary Williams Says Dennis Dixon’s Endorsement of Chip Kelly Factored into His Decision to Sign with the Eagles

Cary Williams was one of several Ravens defensive starters to exit Baltimore this month. And while Williams says that almost every team in the league had interest in him, he chose to join the Philadelphia Eagles. Money was surely a factor, but Williams also says a former teammate and Chip Kelly disciple played a role in the process.Cary Williams joined Mike Missanelli on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia to discuss his experience as a free agent, joining the Eagles and his reputation for having a chip on his shoulder. He also addressed his departure from Baltimore, where a lot of veterans have gotten away this offseason.

On the interest he received on the free-agent market:

“There was a lot of other teams that was interested. Almost every team out there was interested or had something to say positively about my play. Most of them [said] they didn’t have the financial means to get me, but Philly came in, they were the most interested, and decided to give a great deal and I took it.”

On why the Eagles appealed to him:

“I just think Chip Kelly is a very talented coach. He’s a young coach that has a lot of experience coaching in college, and he’s coached great teams. I remember talking to [Dennis] Dixon, and he told me, when he was a practice squad guy and backup quarterback in Baltimore, he told me that he was one of the coolest coaches he had. … I think he’s a player’s coach, like Dixon told me, and I think this is a great opportunity. It’s a great city. Loyal fans, great atmosphere for football, and I think they have a great tradition.”

On his reputation as a scrappy player and his attitude:

“I’m going to definitely tone things down as far as getting into fights and stuff like that. That’s not gonna be a part of my game. But me being physical, me being vocal on Sundays is not gonna change.”

On leaving the Baltimore Ravens:

“For the most part they said they were going to try to keep the team, but this is a business and certain people were going to get out. … I knew that going into free agency that I would not possibly return, and I was fine with that, Ozzie was fine with that, and the team was fine with that. It was just about me finding the right fit.”
