Cycling Tyler Hamilton Lance Armstrong Doping Situation

Tyler Hamilton:

Lance Armstrong Situation Will Make Cycling Better In The FutureThe entire Lance Armstrong doping situation continues to be a black mark on the sport of cycling. For many general sports fans, the ongoing saga surrounding those who used performance-enhancing drugs in the past 10 to 15 years has tarnished the sport forever. But Armstrong’s former teammate, Tyler Hamilton, who has admitted to doping as well, says the fact that truths are coming out will only help the sport going forward.Tyler Hamilton joined Fox Sports Radio with The Loose Cannons to discuss the lies Lance Armstrong is trying to live with, the cycling community’s reaction to the situation, the motivation to cheat, if the sport of cycling is ruined, Floyd Landis’ role in the entire situation and writing a book to make money off of the doping situation. You’ve gone through this.

What do you think Lance Armstrong is going through now as he kind of lives a lie?:

“I can speak from my own experience. I lived a lie for a long, long time. I lied to everybody, including my parents. I thought I could handle going to the grave with all these secrets and lies, for the better part of 10 or 12 years, but when I finally came out and told the truth, it was the best thing that I could’ve ever done. It’s changed my life.”

What has the cycling community’s reaction been to all of this?:

“I think, in general, there’s a lot of sadness, lot of sadness.  A lot of people from back 10 or 12 years ago from racing, they probably know a lot of what’s going on. A lot of them still haven’t come out and told the truth yet. It’s bigger than just Lance Armstrong here. There are a lot of people involved in this. It was just a dark culture of cycling that we were going through. The sport’s changed a lot today, but the more we find out about what happened in the past, how it happened and why it happened, the better direction cycling can go in the future.”

What do you think was Lance Armstrong’s motivation to cheat?:

“Probably a combination of everything. He had, obviously, a lot of pressure on him and the more and more he won, the more and more he wanted to win again. It was almost like an addiction. You might want to ask Lance himself. I don’t know if I have the best answer for you.”

What was in it for his teammates to kind of go along with this?:

“If you want to continue with the team that you’re on with Lance, you had to perform. And if you didn’t perform, you weren’t going to continue on the team. You wouldn’t have your contract renewed. So, that was probably the biggest motivation for his teammates.”

Is the sport of cycling ruined?:

“What we’re going through right now is what happened 10 or  ago. The sport’s come a long way since then, but we’re still digesting some of the things that went on in the past. Obviously it has some work to do and it lost a lot of respect to the general public. … I think there needs to be some weaning out in the sport. There’s been corruption starting from the very top, the governing body of the sport. There’s still a lot of bad apples in the sport  who know what went on, encouraged what went on. Either they need to come clean or just step out.”

Do you think all of this would’ve come out about Lance had Floyd Landis not got caught in the  Tour de France?:

“I know Floyd’s had a tough time with his public image, but without Floyd, without him coming clean and telling the truth, I don’t know if we’d be where we are today. … It’s going to be better for the sport in the future. I wouldn’t want to encourage a young kid to pursue cycling as of 10 or 12 years ago.”

On writing a book and making money off a bad situation:

“It’s the truth and it’s my story and I have every right to tell my story. Once I told the truth for the first time in front of the grand jury, there in the investigation into the U.S. Postal Service team, I knew that was the way to go moving forward. I have the right to tell the truth and I feel good about it. I feel great about it.”
