Danny Amendola Says He Had “Three or Four” Opportunities that “were Far Outweighing what the Rams had Offered”

After emerging as one of the most lethal slot receivers in the league recently in St. Louis, Danny Amendola hit free agency at a perfect time. Not only was Amendola coming off a career year, but the powerhouse New England Patriots were looking to replace Wes Welker. Amendola now has a chance to become a real star, and maybe win some more games, with Bill Belichick’s team.
Danny Amendola joined Brian Stull on ESPN 101 in St. Louis to discuss leaving the Rams to join New England, the free agency process, the offers he received elsewhere as opposed to in St. Louis, and his plan to connect with Tom Brady soon.
On leaving the Rams to join the Patriots:
“It’s bittersweet. St. Louis has been my home for the past four, five years, so it’s gonna be tough missing those guys. I’ve built a lot of relationships over the years and I’m definitely gonna keep in contact with them.”
On the process that led to him signing elsewhere:
“It was my understanding and number one plan to stay a St. Louis Ram. Then when free agency hit it kinda turned into more of a business deal. … There’s a lot of different opportunities, a lot of unique situations on each team and each position, whether I’d be playing special teams or I’d be playing receiver, slot receiver, outside receiver. You gotta take all those in consideration. St. Louis and I, we had a lot of talks. There was a lot of stuff leading up to that final free agency, but at the end of the day it just seemed to have a better opportunity elsewhere for both parties. And that’s what I guess we both kind of decided on.”
On other teams valuing him more than St. Louis did:
“I had three or four head-and-shoulders opportunities that were far outweighing what the Rams had offered, but I understand that it’s a business. I understand that they have numbers, they value me as they will. And it turned out that other teams valued me a little higher and so that’s the way it goes.”
On if he’s connected with Tom Brady yet:
“I’ve talked with Tom a couple times. We’re just trying to get some scheduling down, when we wanna get together and throw here, starting probably next week and then go from there. … I’m ready to get working with him.”
