After her most recent loss to “Cyborg” Santos, MMA fighter Gina Carano decided to take a break from fighting and try her hand at the big screen. Carano, known for her powerful fists and good looks is one of the stars of the movie Haywire, which hits theaters this weekend. The action film features a star-studded cast with Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Antonio Banderas, and of course Carano, making her debut.
As one of the biggest stars in the movie, Carano plays Mallory Kane, a freelance covert operative that gets double-crossed. Carano needs to use her fighting skills to escape an international manhunt, make it back to the United States, protect her family, and get revenge on the people that double-crossed her. Just like in the cage, Carano’s character in the movie carries heavy fists and explosive kicks, but also has a pretty face and can clean up well when she needs to. The character and role fits her perfectly and it’s clear why she was picked for the part.
Gina Carano joined KHTK in Sacramento with Don Geronimo to talk about how she became one of the stars of “Haywire,” whether or not she is planning on retiring from MMA, what it was like to work with Michael Douglas, if she was shocked that “Cyborg” tested positive for steroids, and if she wants to do another movie with a similar role in the future or if she wants to try something different next time.
How she went from MMA fighter to actress:
“I just lost that fight to Cyborg and I was in San Diego and he (Steven Soderbergh) called me up. I met with him for a lunch and he offered me the job. Pretty basic and pretty simple.”
If there are any love scenes in the movie:
“I have a kissing scene with Channing Tatum that my little cousin is very upset with me about.”
Whether or not she is done fighting:
“Well actually I haven’t officially retired yet so I’m not sure. I’m trying to get on the other side of January 20th and then I will figure it out. (Host: If the movie opens to a huge number will you then think about forgetting about fighting?) I don’t know. I really don’t have an answer for that. I haven’t figured it out yet.”
What it was like working with Michael Douglas:
“He brings kinda like a royalty to the set. I only worked with him for about two days. When I showed up I was like all bubbly and then when I got there I was like woah theres a different vibe here. Definitely like a royalty vibe you know.”
If she was surprised that Cyborg tested positive for steroids after their fight:
“Um for some reason I guess I was a little bit shocked. I could’ve gone the rest of my life without hearing that because that was kinda my biggest moment to date in mixed martial arts. It is what it is and it happened.”
What kind of role she would like if she does another movie:
“I think I definitely know what I’m bringing to films right now is a certain type of physicality. It was really nice to represent my sport and bring some mixed martial arts moves into the fight scenes. I had a blast. Honestly it was one of the best experiences of my life.”
