Houston Rockets F Carl Landry Shot Early Morning Tuesday In Houston

Add another chapter to the dark twisted story of professional athletes being targeted by dangerous folks. The latest incident happened early Tuesday morning in Houston, Texas, when Rockets F Carl Landry was involved in a bizarre, harrowing incident southeast of downtown. While driving with a female passenger around 2:30 am, Landry had his SUV sideswiped then rammed by another motorist according to a Houston Police Department spokesperson. After ramming his car, two men apparently got out of their vehicle and confronted Landry, firing at him twice before he and his lady friend were able to make their escape. Landry, while not seriously injured in the melee, still suffered a gun wound to his left calf and is expected to miss close to a month.

Landry is averaging 9.3 points and 5 rebounds per game in the 2008-2009 season. He’s expected to make a full recovery according to his physicians and GM Daryl Morey. Morey, G Aaron Brooks and F Shane Battier all joined KILT in Houston on Tuesday to talk about Landry’s harrowing experience.

Morey on the incident:

“Well I think it’s frightening for anybody. Everyone who knows Carl, that’s why the city loves him…he’s such a happy, upbeat guy. And that’s one thing that stood out to me, just how frightened he was and obviously happy. That’s one of those situations where everyone takes stock in their situation.”

On whether the police have any leads:

“From what the police think, it looks like it was a random act. But I still think it’s too early to have any certainty because it’s an on-going investigation.”

Battier’s reaction to teammate Carl Landry being shot:

“We’re going to miss him the next two weeks, his energy. His punch off the bench has been outstanding. But it’s ironic that other guys will get the chance to step in now, much like he had a chance to step in and give us a lift last year. We’re not worried about Carl from a basketball stand point. That’s the least of our worries. We just want him to get healthy and deal with this episode.”

Brooks on being more careful about paying attention to his surroundings:

“We are high profile and you want to keep your guard up around certain things. But some things, there’s nothing you can do about it. There’s just some things you have no control over.”
