We’re just over a month away from the start of the college football season, which, among other things, means we’ll soon know whether Matt Barkley made a smart choice to return to USC for his senior season. With the Trojans coming off probation and the possibility of winning a Heisman Trophy, Barkley can certainly silence any critics or skeptics who have questioned whether Barkley is making the right choice by not entering this year’s NFL Draft. Barkley though says he has — and will continue to not have — any regrets about his choice. He’s just excited to get back out on the field with his teammates.
Barkley joined The Dan Patrick Show to talk about where he thinks he would have been drafted had he left USC after his junior season, if he thinks he would have been drafted before either Andrew Luck or Robert Griffin III, whether he would have foregone his senior season had USC not been coming off of probation this season, if he’s had any regrets about not entering the NFL Draft this past spring, and who he thinks is the best college football team heading into this season.
If you had entered the draft, who do you think would have picked you?
“I don’t know, maybe Minnesota, maybe Miami, or the Redskins. All those guys, I heard those names tossed around. Would have, could have, should have, who knows.”
What would the order of the quarterbacks selected?
“That would have been up to those GMs I guess. I was confident that I would have gone high. It wasn’t really a question of that as why I came back. I think it was a sure bet that Andrew [Luck] was going number one, but who knows what that would have looked like.”
Do you think you would have been the second quarterback taken?
“I had confidence in that. I think I could have been but you are just so great at asking me hypothetical questions Dan, I love it.”
If USC was still on probation, would you have come back?
“I think that would have mixed it up a little bit to tell you the truth. More than that, I think if we weren’t on probation these last two years, I think I definitely be gone just given that we would have had that experience already, and I think, yea, if we were still on probation that would have lessened my attraction to USC because of not being able to play the postseason.”
When was the last time you had a regret about coming back for your senior season?
“I have not had one yet and I pray I don’t get one. I loved every second of coming back, even class and being around campus and hanging around the guys. I have not looked back once and I don’t plan on doing so.”
What is the best college football team?
“USC. I can’t turn my back on my own guys. I’m loving us and everything about it just like I was a little kid so hopefully we stay up top.”
