Philip Rivers Isn’t Completely Surprised by Jared Gaither’s Release, Expects Chargers to Add More Offensive Linemen

Philip Rivers has lost some support this offseason in San Diego. The team lost guard Louis Vasquez on the free-agent market and gave up on controversial offensive tackle Jared Gaither, who was released last week. Rivers isn’t quite frustrated, but he clearly hopes the Bolts make some moves to address that offensive line before the offseason is over.
Philip Rivers joined Darren Smith on The Mighty 1090 in San Diego to discuss the state of the offensive line in San Diego, Jared Gaither’s release and the addition of Danny Woodhead.
On the offensive line and if it looks like the team will have to add pass protectors:
“Yeah, I think so. They’ve signed a few free agents that have some experience at other places and that have played. And then obviously we lost Vasquez and the release of Gaither yesterday. So there’s been some shuffling around, and I imagine there’ll be some more additions at some point over the next few weeks and few months.”
On if he was surprised to see Jared Gaither get released:
“I can’t say completely surprised. It’s too bad. It really is too bad the way that the whole thing happened. Again, regardless of whose fault, how it was handled, the way that it could have been done differently — I’m talking about the last nine months — but the guy is a heck of a tackle when he’s out there on the field. For reasons that obviously I don’t know all of them that allowed him not to be on the field — injuries and whatever other circumstances — it was tough not having him because we were a lot better team with him. But you hope for his sake, I wish him the best, that his career’s not done. We’ve gotta move forward.”
On Danny Woodhead resembling Darren Sproles:
“I think that they would be in the same category of running back types. … Seeing Danny from afar, he certainly brings that same type of style to the game and can do some of the same type of things. Hopefully he’ll be able to give us that same type of dimension that we’ve missed that Darren gave us.”
