Rex Ryan Believes Jets Can Overcome Losing Darrelle Revis For The Season
September 25, 2012 – 5:45 am by Steven Cuce
For the New York Jets organization, their worst nightmare was confirmed yesterday. Darrelle Revis did indeed tear his left ACL and will miss the remainder of the season. The most dominant shutdown corner in all of professional football is now gone from a defense that has looked incredibly average at the start of the regular season.
The unfortunate part of football is that injuries are almost guaranteed to everyone due to the violent nature of the game. It’s a shame that one of the all-time good guys had to land such a bad break, but Rex Ryan is forced to rally his team at this point. The Jets head coach believes Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Harris are up to the challenge.

Rex Ryan joined ESPN Radio New York with The Michael Kay Show to discuss losing Darrelle Revis for the season with an ACL tear, the New York Jets defense changing without Darrelle Revis and the Jets dealing with the loss of the best player on their team.
How do you feel about Darrelle Revis, the man, and what this injury means to him?
“Oh man, it’s brutal. This is the unfortunate thing in this business and playing in the National Football League and I mentioned it before, its 100 percent injury rate, so basically at one point or another a player is going to get injured. It’s a very physical sport obviously. That’s why very few individuals can play this sport. It takes special people to play this game, without question, and Darrelle Revis would head that list. He would be right up there with those guys and you hate to see it for any player. Obviously any player as talented as Darrelle Revis is going to have an impact on your football team, without question, but as a person and everyone else, he’s such a competitor and just loves the game, loves his teammates. It’s tough to lose somebody like that.”
How much does the game plan change without him?
“Well I think there will definitely be changes in what you do. When you take a guy that is clearly the premiere corner in this league and you take him away from your football team, you got to do things differently, but not one guy. You can’t put it on one guy to replace a Darrelle Revis. Kyle Wilson is not going to be able to replace Darrelle Revis, but we have to find a way to get it done and we have to do it collectively. It’s going to be…we all have to play better. We all have to coach better and all that. I think we are the type of team to do that.”
Is losing Darrelle Revis the biggest blow the Jets can face this season?
“Well I would think so. You are taking a guy that NFL players voted as the top defensive player in the National Football League, so I don’t know if you can get one worse than that from losing the type of player he is, but we can overcome it. There is no doubt. In the past, in one game, we had to overcome the loss of Leon Washington and Kris Jenkins. Both guys were done for the season and we got to the championship game and the next year we lose Kris Jenkins three plays into the season, and obviously he is one of the premiere defensive lineman in the league, so we’ve been able to do it. This team is resilient that way. I also think we are a very talented team and we’re fortunate. Some teams don’t even have a No. 1 corner. We are fortunate. We had the best corner in football. We also had a No. 1 corner in Antonio Cromartie and we drafted Kyle Wilson to basically be a No. 2 corner, so we have enough pieces here. We can get this thing done. I think, overall as a football team, we have to step it up and improve our game. Every player and every coach has to find a way to get this done. But by any stretch, we are in first place and we plan on staying here, so obviously it’s going to be tough. We know the opponents up next for us, so we know how tough it’s going to be, but we think we are the guys for the job.”
