Russell Wilson Says Nothing Has Surprised Him During His Rookie Season

Russell Wilson is one of several rookie quarterbacks who have exceeded expectations early in 2012. But can the undersized Wilson keep it up as the Seahawks look to make a playoff push? He’ll have to win some tough games, including this Sunday’s road matchup with the Detroit Lions.

Russell Wilson joined Bob and Groz on 710 ESPN in Seattle to discuss the Lions, his rookie season thus far, the Seattle offense, the loss of Doug Baldwin and how he felt playing the 49ers on very short rest.
On the Lions being vulnerable in the secondary:
“The biggest opportunity, obviously, is their secondary, just because they’ve had some guys in and out with injuries and everything, which is unfortunate for them. The key is getting the ball out on time, throwing an accurate football so our guys can make some plays. Obviously they have a tremendous, tremendous defensive line; their linebackers are playing at a high level. And they’ve made some plays in the defensive secondary as well.”
On if anything’s surprised him thus far in his rookie season:
“Nothing at all. I think that I’ve been prepared since Day 1 and just continue to grow. That’s what I’ve been doing, and focusing on continuing to trust the process of learning and continuing to gain knowledge — as much knowledge as I can gain.”
On if he’s anxious to do more on offense:

“I wouldn’t say I’m anxious at all. I trust in our offensive coordinator, Darrell Bevell. I trust in Coach Carroll and what they’re doing. We’re doing a great job. We’ve put ourselves in situations to win the game. We’re 4-3, we’ve lost three tough games on the road where we definitely — I believe — should have won those games. If we made a few more plays on my part and other guys’ parts and just collectively finished the game, we could have had those opportunities. And so I think the main thing is, in terms of throwing the football, I’ll do whatever it takes to win. Whether it’s throwing it 60 times — I’ve done that before and won a lot of games — or whether it’s throwing it 25 or 30 times. I’ll do whatever it takes to win.”
On how much they’ll miss Doug Baldwin:
“I think not having him definitely hurts a little bit, but we’ve got guys to step in that have done a great job throughout camp. Charly Martin has done a tremendous job so far this season in terms of just practice and in terms of showing up when he needs to and just making the right plays. He’s very consistent in terms of catching the football, he runs the right routes, he’s very quick, too. … And so there’s other guys that fill in and are doing a great job of making plays when we need them.”
On the difficult task of having to play San Francisco last week on short rest:
“I think Coach Carroll did a tremendous job of getting us ready. We made a lot of great plays, and I think that everybody’s bodies were ready. In terms of the way we practiced, we kinda took it light throughout practice. But the mental side of it is where you really need to be great, especially in this league. And so I think Coach Carroll did a tremendous job of getting us ready.”
