Sidney Crosby Admits That If The Lockout Continues He’ll “Think Pretty Hard” About Playing Elsewhere
September 20, 2012 – 6:30 am by Brad Gagnon
The Pittsburgh Penguins were supposed to start training camp this Friday, but the NHL and NHLPA are still locking horns and it appears time will be missed yet again as the work stoppage continues. Now we watch to see how many of the league’s brightest stars opt to play elsewhere in the meantime.
Sidney Crosby joined Jim Colony on 97.3 The Fan in Pittsburgh to discuss the NHL lockout, including the NHLPA’s latest proposal and whether he’ll consider playing overseas or anywhere else if the lockout continues.
On he and Mario Lemieux and the power they wield:
“Him and I can talk all day about it and it’s not gonna change anything. The people that need to be talking are Don and Gary. It’s business. It’s something I don’t think anybody really enjoys. I think we all realize it comes with it, but that being said, I don’t think anybody really wants to be doing this in September.”
On the players’ latest proposal to the league:
“I like our proposal. I really do. When you hear what the league’s issues are, I think we clearly tried to address that in our proposal. And the game is healthy. For sure there are some teams and franchises that need some help and we’ve made it pretty clear we’re willing to work with the league and work with everyone to help those teams. That being said, it doesn’t really seem like the proposal we got in return is really clearly addressing those needs. They’re addressing some needs of maybe some other owners, too, and it’s pretty flat-line there.”
On the current system not doing enough to help struggling teams:
“With the current way it is, I don’t think that’s helping those teams the way it should. If that were the case, those teams wouldn’t be in trouble right now, so I think that’s really what we’re trying to do.”
On if or when he’ll consider playing somewhere such as Russia:
“I’ll wait and see. I don’t have a hard date or anything like that. I just want to get a feel for how things move along here and hopefully there are some positive talks and some movement, and a sign that things are going to get done here. But I’ll just wait and see how things go. … We have enough guys to get some good workouts in here. And if it seems like it’s taking a little bit more time, then I’ll have to think pretty hard about maybe going to play somewhere until they figure it out.”
