With Willis McGahee out for at least several weeks due to a knee injury, the pressure in Denver’s backfield will fall on Lance Ball. The first-place Broncos will have to hope that the veteran backup can carry a big chunk of the load left behind by McGahee, with some help from rookie Ronnie Hillman. Lance Ball joined Les & Tom on 102.3 The Ticket in Denver to talk about replacing Willis McGahee, the work load he expects to receive, the lack of panic in Denver’s locker room and whether he expects the backs to catch more passes with McGahee out.
On replacing Willis McGahee:
“It’s just an opportunity to go out there and have some fun playing football and running the ball. It’s unfortunate that Willis is out but guys have got to step up.”
On if he expects to get lots of carries between the tackles:
“I think that’s definitely part of our offense, playing our scheme. Definitely. I think [running backs] coach [Eric] Studesville is gonna look for me to go in there and make some key plays, key runs.”
On there being no need to panic:
“There’s no need to panic. I think Foxy told us at the beginning of the season, things are going to happen, guys are gonna have to step up. Next guy up. In the running back room I think we’re pretty confident.”
On if we’ll see more passes to the running backs now:
“I think it’s all up to what they want to do, Mike McCoy and the offense. Obviously we’ll definitely incorporate it in the passing game, so we’ll just have to look up and be ready to catch the ball.”
